The goal of angioplasty is to open arteries that are blocked with atherosclerotic plaque and is performed on the coronary arteries and on the periphery arteries. The procedure is performed in the Cardiac Catheterization lab. Coronary artery disease occurs when atherosclerotic plaque develops in the coronary arteries. Plaque (a steno sis, lesion, or blockage) is a complex accumulation of lipid material as well as cellular material that can grow overtime to obstruct the blood flow. This process is called atherosclerosis. Angina is a medical term describing the symptoms that occur when the heart muscle is deprived of blood flow. This can occur when the artery is partially obstructed (schemia), or when you have an acute rupture of plaque (what is involved in a heart attack). Restenosis is the achilies heel of an angioplasty procedure. Angioplasty restores blood flow to the heart and reduces symptoms. It does not change the course of coronary artery disease. The correct recipe of medications can reduce your risk of cardiac events or death by 75%. Coronary artery disease involves inflammation, blood clot, and the wall of the artery.
