The health benefits of Omega3 essential fatty acids are becoming more and more mainstream, and gradually the population is becoming aware that most of us are deficient in their Omega3 intake and that increasing our intake of essential fatty acids may help improve a number of health outcomes for all of us. Omega3 fatty acids are found in fish oil and this obviously comes from fish, however fish is generally contaminated with Mercury. So what do you do increase your intake of healthy fats if the source, namely fish, is contaminated with Mercury?

A new study published this year has shed some light on the Mercury contamination of fish. The study examined Mercury contamination of fish in the North Pacific and found that levels of Mercury in that ocean had increased by 30 percent over the last 10 years.

Not only that but it also concluded that around 40 percent of all Mercury exposure of people in the US came from tuna consumption from tuna caught in the Pacific.

This is a serious concern. You do not want to be eating Mercury. It is an environmental toxin and has serious implications for the health of adults, and in particular for the developing fetus and infants. It’s a neurotoxin.

It was found that Mercury made its way into the oceans because of atmospheric Mercury production as well as Mercury leakage from Asia. It was present in the oceans as methylmercury, and works its way up the food chain to the fish at the top of the food chain, commonly shark and tuna. And shark and tuna make up a large percentage of our fish intake.

So there is a dilemma here for anyone wishing to increase their intake of Omega3 fats from eating more fish. If you eat more fish you get more Omega3 oils in your diet however you also increase your level of Mercury consumption.

Fish is expensive and is also a declining resource. Is there a better way of increasing your intake of essential fatty acids other than eating expensive fish? Yes there is.

A much better way that is both more cost-effective and safer than eating more fish is by daily supplementation with omega3 supplements. These can be called fish oil supplements, and the best fish oil supplements are much more cost-effective than eating fish and are also free of contamination with Mercury. Large numbers of people now recognize this and the sales of omega3 supplements are increasing faster than any other nutritional supplement in history.

Of course if you like fish and wish to increase your intake of omega3 then you can do so by eating more fish, but this is expensive and increases your intake of Mercury. That’s fine if you understand this, however if you merely wish to increase your dietary intake of essential fatty acids without the cost or the risk of Mercury contamination fish oil supplements offer a safe and cost-effective way to do so.

But it’s worth saying that there are big variations between the different brands of omega 3 supplements, with the best fish oil capsules having more than 2 1/2 times as much omega 3 fats as average fish oil supplements.

You may know all about the health benefits of Omega 3 essential fatty acids, it’s been in the news lately and many people are now beginning to understand about the importance of supplementing their diet with the essential fatty acids. We’re all deficient in these. But what are Omega 6 fats and what is the Omega 3 Omega 6 ratio?

Essential fatty acids are important for good health. We cannot manufacture these in our body and so we rely on a daily intake of these in our diet. Omega 3 fats are primarily found in fish and research has shown that most of us are deficient in omega3 in our diets.

Omega 6 fatty acids, on the other hand, are found in only plant based sources. They are found in vegetable oils like peanut oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil and corn oil are high in Omega 6 and soy oil is almost totally comprised of Omega 6 fat.

Because many of these vegetable oils are very cheap they are used extensively in processed foods, particularly in margarine, for this reason our intake of Omega 6 fats, though important for our diet in limited amounts, is excessive.

In the past, according to research, we ate roughly as much omega3 as Omega 6 fats. This produced an Omega 3 Omega 6 ratio around 1 to 1. But because of our dietary reliance on food sources such as vegetable oils and processed foods there are estimates suggesting that our Omega 6 Omega 3 ratio has changed to around 10 to 1, and some estimates are that it is now as high as 30 to 1. Most of us are eating way too much Omega 6 fatty acids.

Whilst 6 is important to our health increasing the ratio between the 2 as we have done over the last hundred or so years is not. There are a range of health implications from eating too much Omega 6 fatty acids and too little Omega 3. In particular it is thought that we are exposing ourselves to an increased range of lifestyle diseases including cancer, coronary artery disease and various inflammatory related diseases such as arthritis.

Combine this with the fact that in the past most of our meat came from animals which were grass fed, and which therefore had a reasonable level of Omega3 fats, but most of our animals are now grain fed which reduces the levels of omega3 fats and increases the level of Omega 6 and you can see that there is no need at all for supplementation with 6.

Whilst it is extremely important to get an adequate intake of Omega 3 fatty acids in our diet, and most of us are deficient in these, it is equally important to ensure that we reduce our intake of Omega 6 fats to maintain a healthy Omega 3 Omega 6 ratio. We can do this by reducing the amount of processed foods and vegetable oils in our diet and changing to healthier oils for cooking such as olive oil. And equally important is to increase our intake of essential fatty acids by dietary supplementation with fish oil supplements.

It is important to understand however that not all fish oil supplements are as good as others, some having far more of the important fats than others, and you need to know how to compare the different fish oil supplements available to make an informed choice.

Set up a cable crossover machine with one arm handles in the top position on both sides and a straight-bar attached to the low position on one side. Set the stack with the straight-bar attached to a moderately heavy weight. Let’s use 100 lbs. as an example. Set the other weight stack at one half that weight (in this case 50 lbs.). Start the set by doing the straight-bar curls at 100 lbs. I like to use a fairly close grip on these (about 6″ apart). Be sure to fully contract your biceps in the peak position – this is key. When you reach the top position, try curling your wrists inward towards your chin to further emphasize the contraction. Lower the weight slowly to really work the eccentric part of the movement. Shoot for 8-12 reps to failure.

When complete, immediately drop the weight stack by half – in this case from 100 lbs. to 50 lbs. The other side should already be set at 50 lbs.; this is to save time as you need to transition from one movement to the next as quickly as possible (no break). Grab the two upper handles as if you were going to do cable crossovers, only have your palms pointing up towards the ceiling. Now, curl both arms in towards your head as if you were striking a front double-biceps pose. Squeeze at peak contraction and hold for a count of two. Be sure to emphasize the negative part of the movement. Stick with a rep range of 8-12. Take a minute, repeat the superset once more, and feel your arms explode.

Now it’s time to incorporate the creatine. This should lead to a huge size increase within your biceps. Many people find that after a few weeks, the bicep gains they make on creatine monohydrate begin to taper off or even disappear altogether. There’s an increasing belief among hardcore trainers that cycling creatine intake may help one experience continued progress with this proven supplement.

Here’s a typical creatine cycle you might try adding to your supplement bicep workout program:
week 1: load (20 g / day)
week 2-4 : maintenance (10 g / day)
week 5: load (20 g / day)
week 6-8: OFF
Repeat Cycle.

You’re basically “on” for 5 weeks (higher than average doses), then “off” completely for 3 weeks. This seems to work well and can help give you continual progress with creatine supplementation. Of course, another important factor is what type of creatine you’re using. I never made great gains with creatine until I switched to a creatine formula as opposed to just mixing the powder up myself. With creatine it’s best to avoid generic powders (the cheap stuff), as its purity is often in question and it doesn’t seem to work nearly as well as the quality formulas on the market.

Understanding what supplements can do for a person requires a thorough knowledge of what is being supplemented. In the case of Testosterone Supplements, it is necessary to understand how testosterone functions in the body. Testosterone plays a major role in males by transforming food into energy, increasing brain function, and building strong bodies. It is best known for two things, sexual drive and body building. Men who use supplements, or boosters as they are sometimes called, are either trying to build bulk, or attempting to reverse the effects of aging.

Testosterone hormones are basically natural steroids produced by the human body. In the world of sports, the word steroids causes strong negative reactions. That is most likely due to the illegal use of steroids during professional competitions. Although every authority strongly opposes it, teenagers often want to use steroids to build more muscle mass. Anybody under the age of twenty-five should avoid Testosterone Supplements since hormones are at their peak during the young adult stage of life.

However, body builders over the age of twenty-five will benefit from supplements. Increased levels of testosterone result in higher energy levels. Testosterone Supplements help the body build muscles quicker, while at the same time work at decreasing body fat. The best supplements use a combination of testosterone and protein. They can be taken in pill form, but a popular method of getting the hormone into the blood stream quicker is to use a strip that melts under the tongue. Consulting with a doctor before using any body enhancing product is always recommended.

Aging men experience complications caused by diminished testosterone levels. In recent years, Testosterone Supplements have been offered as a way for a man to regain his libido later in life. But reduced testosterone levels are also known to cause depression and anxiety. Additionally, heart disease and diabetes are considered to be the result of lowered levels of testosterone. It is no wonder that baby boomers are increasingly seeking hormonal replacement that the supplements offer. Anti-aging doctors are still conducting studies to find out how much benefit the supplements can be to Alzheimer patients. Many believe that there is a connection between memory loss and the gradual loss of testosterone as we age. They hope that by replenishing the level of testosterone, they can help their patients avoid the devastating disease. What has become known as a body builder’s formula may soon be able to save the lives of millions.

Starting from the moment of conception, each stage of life has unique nutritional requirements. Even before conception, a woman who has the possibility of becoming pregnant should be taking special vitamins to protect her potential child so that the body has time to prepare. One of the benefits of taking a Multivitamin is that the body is helped in ways that a person does not even know they need. If all young women would take vitamins that include folic acid, the occurrence of spina bifida would be greatly reduced. That alone should be enough to encourage women of child bearing years to take vitamins.

Many children do not eat what is put on their plate. These finicky eaters pass over the nutritional food for the junk food that they are later able to convince their parents to give them. For this young group, there are special Multivitamins that appeal to them. A popular form, and one that is never turned down, is the chewy substance that looks just like the candy called gummy bears. Even as children get older and become willing to eat more nutritional foods, they fall into the same trap as their parents. They run out of time to eat properly, and fall into the fast food habit. There are soccer games, karate classes, and whatever other activity that is age appropriate. Parents come home from work, grab the kids, and make a mad dash through the drive through lane before rushing to their next pit stop.

The men and women who are in the great rat race need their own special vitamins. Each gender has specific needs for their body to function more fully. Men need a vitamin that will help prevent prostate cancer. Some men are into body building and need a vitamin that will replenish their body after a strenuous workout. Women, on the other hand, require a Multivitamin that contains a high level of iron which men do not need.

Unfortunately, both men and women have new problems as they age. Since bones break more easily, hip fractures are common. Recent studies have shown that increased amounts of vitamin K can help reduce the rate of these occurrences. There are special Multivitamins for what is known as the silver years. It is easy to see that every stage of life needs a boost that can be gained by its own specific daily supplement.
