If you want better health, aside from eating right and engaging in regular exercise, you also need to work on your digestive health. Having stomach trouble is such a common thing that most of think it’s just a normal thing. The truth of the matter is, it can be avoided. You don’t have to suffer indigestion, gas, bloat or feel tired after meals if you are in good digestive health. Aside from not having to experience the physical discomforts of digestive problems, a healthy digestive tract will also help you fully utilize the food you eat.

Below are 6 ways to better digestion:

1. Eat slowly. When you eat too fast, your tendency is to overeat. The process of digestion starts in the mouth. By chewing your food well, you allow the saliva to effectively do its work of breaking down the food you eat. When you rush through your meal, you sabotage the digestion process right at the very beginning. Naturally problems would result immediately after your meal, or soon after. Eating too fast is definitely counterproductive to your goal of improved digestion.

2. Eat a balanced diet. What you put into your digestive tract will certainly affect its condition. If you put a lot of junk and poison into it, then it (you) will suffer. Conversely if you eat right, then it will function well. Make sure to eat from all 4 good groups. A practical way to do this is by staying out of the isles while shopping for groceries. The only place you should be pushing your cart is along the edges of the store as these are where the bakery, fruit, vegetable, dairy, and meat and poultry sections are. If you limit your shopping within these areas, you will be buying foods from the 4 food groups and you can easily plan balanced meals. Eating the right foods is the first step towards improved digestion.

3. Eat only when you are hungry. Instead of eating by the clock, eat only when you’re hungry. If your eating is triggered by hunger, the body releases more enzymes in the stomach allowing proper digestion to occur. On the other hand, when you eat even if you’re not hungry, your stomach may not secrete the sufficient number of enzymes necessary for good digestion.

4. Find out if you have any food allergies. Your problems with digestion may be a result of food allergy. It is worth the effort to determine what foods you are allergic to, if any. Once you have identified which these are, it may be better if you eliminate them from your diet. Food allergies can keep your body from effectively doing its work of digestion. If you experience constipation, upset stomach, diarrhea, and bloating after eating certain foods, you are most likely allergic to them.

5. Limit the amount of sugar you consume. Aside from being fattening and affecting your blood sugar levels, sugar also encourages the growth of yeast and harmful bacteria in your digestive tract. It is a food source for these undesirable organisms. If you have an overabundance of these, your ability to properly digest your food will be negatively affected.

Having a healthy digestive system is a basic requirement if you want to achieve overall good health. If you follow the tips above, you will not only put an end to your stomach woes, you will also have more energy. And as a built-in bonus, you will lose excess weight as well which for many is actually reason enough to go for it.

We have all heard the phrase “mind over matter”, something that is perhaps best illustrated by the yogis of India who are able to endure unbelievable pain through the power of meditation, basically a mental activity.

A clear illustration of how the mind can influence the outcome of many of the tasks we undertake can be seen in the film, Facing the Giants, the true story of Coach Grant Taylor’s courageous battle against fear and failure both on and off the field. There is a part in the movie where the coach makes his high school football players perform a death crawl on the entire length of the field with another person on each player’s back. The players are able to accomplish the daunting task because they have been blindfolded in order to keep them from giving up before maximizing their potential.

A research conducted recently at the University of Cape Town in South Africa proved that our brains tend to turn on the pain way before we reach our potential. It appears that the receptors in the brain called interleukin-6 attempts to shut the body down as a defense mechanism. What separates elite athletes from regular ones is that they know what mental techniques to use so that they can experience the full benefit of their workout. According to one elite athlete, what is important is to have a specific goal because none of the techniques would be of any help without it.

Using that information as a springboard, let us look at some of the things you can do so that you too can harness the power of your mind to get the most from your workouts:

1. Visualize success.
Consciously make the effort of imagining yourself completing a specific activity that you aim to accomplish, whatever it may be. It can be as simple as adding in an extra rep, or finishing a marathon. Your visualization doesn’t have to be long but you have to do it every night.

2. Make your mind blank.
A successful personal trainer tells his clients to block everything out of their minds when doing a specific activity in their workout routine. When you do this, remember that what is important is to concentrate on performing the activity with precision without allowing any emotions or thoughts to enter your mind, particularly negative ones.

3. Use a mantra.
Find a mantra or a phrase that inspires and motivates you to keep on and say it over and over as you work out. Many athletes have used a personal training mantra with success and exercise buffs have followed suit. If you are having a hard time coming up with one, try Nike’s famous advertising slogan “Just do it!” for starters.

4. Be strong.
Another powerful mind conditioning technique is to assert your superiority over an activity. Tell yourself, “I’m stronger or faster than the weight” if you are about to lift at a poundage that you have never tried before and believe it. You can also do this with endurance training. In this case you can tell yourself over and over that, “This will be faster than my previous time faster than my previous time.” The key is to blast your old assumption of what you think you can do. Challenge yourself, up the ante, you might be surprised at what you can actually do.

Metabolism is the process in which the food and beverages you ingest are converted into energy. This energy is used by your body for your day-to-day activities as well as staying alive. This is called burning of calories.

Metabolisms vary from person to person, from fast to slow. People with a faster metabolism can burn more calories and tend to store less fat in the body. The fat that has been stored is not necessarily a health hazard, but is saved for future use.

For people who have a slow metabolism, calorie-burning takes place slowly. Some of these people have more fat deposited in their body. This excess fat is not necessary for the minimal functioning of your body, and is harmful. Medical science is discovering that excess fat stored in your body, especially around your stomach area, causes inflammation, which is the precursor to many diseases.

People with a slow metabolism can increase their metabolic rate by doing strength training. Building muscle speeds up your metabolism because muscle weighs more than fat, and needs more calories to maintain, even in a resting state.

The metabolic rate is the amount of calories you burn to keep your body tissues and organs in proper working condition. Metabolic rates are related to genetics as well. Some people are born with a faster metabolism. If you have a slower metabolism, start working out, as this temporarily speeds up your metabolism for up to several hours later, and therefore, uses more calories.

Age is another factor that affects our metabolism. As we grow older, our body needs fewer calories. Our caloric needs decrease an average of 2% per decade. So be aware of the quantity of food you eat. Correct portion sizes are a lot smaller than your eyes (and stomach) would have you believe.

Nutrition is another factor that affects your metabolism. Your body needs a proper supply of nutrients to perform at maximum efficiency. You won’t get proper nutrition if your diet includes foods mostly manufactured from white flour, white sugar, or white rice. Find yourself some whole grain breads and rice and eliminate the white sugar. Once you get used to the whole grains, you’ll find you won’t like the white stuff any longer.

The secrets about metabolism are the same for everyone, whether your metabolism is fast or slow:

– Exercise Regularly: both aerobic and strength training

– Eat Nutritious Meals Regularly: eat smaller meals throughout the day

– Read Food Labels: be aware of what is in the food you eat

This should help you increase your longevity as well as your enjoyment of life.

Millions of smokers all over the world are still battling to give up tobacco. This can be one of the most difficult undertakings of their life. Those who have never smoked cigarettes have no idea what it is to try and stop smoking. It is usually a life long addiction even for those that mange to find a way to quit and stay quit. Even years after some smokers have stopped, they will tell you they occasionally have the urge to smoke again. Of course, it does get a lot easier to resist the temptation, but it can take years to get to the point where it is no longer bothersome.

Some smokers are finding a shortcut to giving up tobacco, but are still able to satisfy the habit they have had for song. The electric cigarette does offer hope for those who have tried to give up tobacco unsuccessfully. With most smokers the craving for nicotine is a part of the smoking addiction, but the act of smoking is often the biggest culprit in failure to quit. A smoker is so accustomed to holding the cigarette between their fingers and inhaling something, that this can be the most difficult thing to stop wanting to do.

The electric cigarette addresses this issue very well. A smoker can still get the same amount of nicotine that they are used to having, but they no longer have to worry about what they are inhaling being carcinogenic. The e-cigarette is never lit with fire so it is non-carcinogenic. There are different levels of nicotine filters available for the e-cigarette just like you can purchase tobacco cigarettes in different strengths. A smoker can reduce the amount of nicotine they are taking in a little at a time especially if they buy the nicotine liquid and refill the filters themselves. Some e-cigarette users use a filter that has no nicotine in them at all. They are just satisfying their craving to feel like they are smoking something.

The electric cigarette was not designed for people to use as a stop smoking device, although many have used it for that, it was designed to give smokers an alternative to tobacco. There is no tar associated with this product because the burning tobacco is what makes the tar and nothing is burned with this innovative device. Most tobacco smokers can become accustomed to the differences in the taste and sensation of the e-cigarette with in a few days because they are so similar. Giving up smoking tobacco for a better and probably much safer product can be a lot easier than you ever imagined.
