Just as carbohydrates are the energy supply of a body builder both in and out of the gym, so too are the proteins the building blocks that help build muscle tissues. New growth is only achieved when the protein supply in the body is adequate. Furthermore, the repair of those cells injured during intense workouts, the rejuvenation of the exhausted muscles and the replacement of all muscle cells damaged beyond repair can only be done using proteins available in the body.

Dietitians advise that proteins are the essential building blocks necessary for the both repair and the growth of all muscle tissues in a body builder. Vital amino acids are derived from the proteins to form these crucial building blocks required for the development of all cells in the body. Simply put, without adequate supplies of proteins, a body builder’s organs, the hair even, nails and the immune system can not be functional. In fact, no body part of a human body can survive in the absence of proteins.

An active body builder intent on muscle accumulation needs to adequately supply his or her body with protein so as to facilitate normal day to day functions of the body. More so, he or she requires proteins to aid in the recovery of muscle tissues abused by the daily workouts. As such, the daily protein requirements, in this regard for body builders, must be rationed in a way that adequately caters for these needs. This has caused a liturgy of controversy and disputes for years between the industry’s professionals.

Of late however, both sports nutritionists and expert body builders have come to agree that one to two grams of protein should be eaten for every pound of the body weight. This amount has experimentally proved both safe and effective. A lesser ration might negatively affect the recovery and growth rate. Contrary to common practice and believe among body builders, higher than necessary amounts of protein in the diet do not add up as more beneficial than the optimal rationing. Among body builders, the best known and used protein sources include protein powders and assorted protein supplements. Naturally, turkey, fish, Chicken, red meat and egg whites rule king as protein-rich foods.

In essence therefore, the protein intake of a body builder should constitute approximately thirty to thirty five percent of his or her total caloric ration in the daily diet. For instance, a male body builder weighing at about 200 lbs normally eats approximately 3000 calories daily. Such a body builder should therefore consume about 250 grams of protein in the daily diet. This constitutes a thirty three percent portion of the total calorie intake. For a woman body builder who weighs about 130 lbs, she ought to eat at least 1950 calories daily. This would therefore require her to eat about 160 grams of proteins in the daily diet constituting thirty three percent of the total calorie intake.

These ration of proteins in the daily diet should optimally be distributed somewhat fairly (or equally, for that matter) throughout the day in different meals.

The widely accepted guidelines for fitness suggest that everyone should spend a minimum of half an hour engaging in exercise per day, even if it’s only ten minutes, three times a day. However, the longer the period of time that exercise is practiced at once, the stronger the benefits of the work out are. The human body actually accelerates the amount of calories it burns with time, so that working out for twenty minutes will actually burn more than twice the amount of calories than working out for ten minutes would!

The stationary exercise bike can help make the most of any work out.

The problem most people today find with getting (or not getting!) enough exercise is the lack of free time in the day. Many people are so busy they either don’t have time to go to the gym or they aren’t motivated to spend the scant amount of free time they do have navigating a busy fitness center environment. Weather is often a factor for those who work out at home by walking, running or biking outdoors and home gym equipment is expensive and bulky. The exercise bike is an attractive and sensible solution to these problems.

Some of the equipment at the gym is complicated and intimidating. If it’s not used just right the benefits can be insignificant. The stationary bike is simple to use while providing the user with many options for a more, or less, strenuous work out. It can be found in all gyms and fitness centers and takes up a minimal amount of space at home.

There are so many benefits to working out on the stationary bike, it could be said that it is an essential part of any work out routine.

This type of bike provides both cardiovascular work out and muscle building exercise. The tension in the bike pedals can be adjusted, making the work out as moderate or as challenging as desired by individual preferences, while the easy to read electronic display shows the heart rate, an essential piece of information to know for maximum cardio and fat-burning benefit. It’s easy on the ankles and knees, so choose the terrain you’d like to ride, whether hilly, flat or intermittent, and ride for miles without leaving your spot.

The bike can provide a great work out even while watching a favorite TV program! Plug in ear buds at the gym or turn up the volume at home and get a great work out while engaging in an otherwise stationary activity! Even on a rainy day, or during a winter freeze, the stationary bike can provide great healthy activity and a reminder of nicer weather by engaging in a once seasonal activity reserved for gentle, sunny days.

Essentially, the bike is a great all-around workout that gives maximum health benefits with minimum complications. So, for those looking for an easy and fun workout that packs great results into a short routine, try the bike today. A great majority of us get affected by acne vulgaris at some point in our lives to varying degrees. Because of the physical pain, discomfort and cosmetic problems it brings it is a skin condition everybody would prefer to be without. In this article you will learn more about what exactly acne is, why people get it, what the symptoms are and the possible options for treatment that one can consider.

The occurrence of acne vulgaris is quite widespread over all population groups. Females are affected during puberty more than males and during adulthood males are more prone to suffer from acne than females. There are quite a few contributing factors that cause acne;

-Hyperproliferisation of the follicle epithelium: The epithelium cells in the hair follicle proliferate at an abnormally high rate which results in the follicle getting plugged up. This is one of the first signs of acne. It is not clear why this happens but possible reasons are the effect of androgen hormones, inflammation and dilution of lipids on the skin (like linoleic acid) because of increased amount of sebum.
-Excess sebum production: Androgen hormones stimulate sebaceous glands to produce more sebum which make your skin very, very oily which can predispose acne.
-Propionibacterium acnes: This is a kind of bacteria which causes infection and therefore redness and inflammation in the follicles and pores. The bacteria are usually present in the more advanced stages of acne.

Acne typically appears on the skin of the face, chest and upper back. Not all acne lesions are the same; they vary depending on where they are located and the severity of the case;

-Closed comedos (whitish lump in the skin due to a clogged sebaceous gland).
-Open comedos (black tipped plugging of the pores of the skin).
-Papules (elevated and inflamed are of the skin without pus).
-Pustules (elevated and inflamed area of the skin containing pus).

The amount of lesions and the degree of inflammation that they present with is used to judge the severity of the case.

From this one can see what needs to be done to treat acne vulgaris. The skin needs to be cleaned to unblock pores, sebum secretion needs to be minimised and Propionibacterium acnes needs to be eradicated. Consult with your pharmacist for an appropriate remedy for your acne. If your acne is too severe for over-the-counter medicines to treat, you will be referred to a doctor or specialist for something more potent.

As the temperature rises, swimming suits and shorts come out of the closet, flip flops get dusted off, and all thoughts of winter are left behind. Summertime means yards work outside, days at the beach, and outside fun with the family. However, the intense summer sun can cause skin damage and cancer, so using sunscreen is a daily necessity, especially during all those outside activities.

The purpose of a sunscreen is to block the harmful UVA and UVB radiation from the sun. This radiation damages all skin types, from those who are fair to those who have a dark complexion or tan easily. In fact, a reliable sunscreen is necessary even on a cloudy day because the cloud layer does not block this radiation. All sunscreens carry a Sun Protection Factor or SPF. The SPF rating shows how the product performs in protecting against UVB radiation. Wearing a sunscreen of SPF 15 daily will help prevent the sun’s damaging effects. It is recommended to apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before sun exposure. During the summer most people flock to the beaches, so some sunscreens are designed to be water-proof or sweat-proof.

Most of the sunscreens available on the market block damaging radiation through a concoction of different chemical ingredients. These products are normally in the forms of creams or sprays. Once sunscreen is applied onto the skin, the chemicals work to both reflect and scatter the radiation, or absorb it. In recent years, there have been many questions raised about the safety and effectiveness of these chemicals. Some scientists claim these chemicals produce free radicals, which actually increase skin damage and the risk of skin cancer, rather than lowering it. Another concern is that these synthetic chemicals may accumulate in the human body, and can actually reach the blood stream by being absorbed through the skin.

Since the goal of using a sunscreen is to protect the body, and not harm it, many consumers have turned to using organic sunscreen to protect their families.
Organic sunscreens use a combination of naturally occurring herbs, plant proteins, and minerals to provide sun protection. Some organic sunscreens are infused with vitamins to benefit your skin. Different types of organic sunscreens are available including creams, sprays, and powders which all carry appropriate SPF ratings. Organic powder sunscreens are mineral based, and are perfect for everyday protection. Minerals commonly found in organic sunscreen are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. One advantage of choosing the organic sunscreens over the chemical ones is they reduce the risk of skin irritation. Those with sensitive skin will especially benefit from the skin soothing properties of organic ingredients.

Before you hit the beach this summer it is imperative you remember to apply a quality sunscreen. The varieties of organic and chemical based sunscreens are endless. Choose a sunscreen that is good for your skin, has an appropriate SPF rating, and is designed for your activity. Using this must have item now, will benefit your skin for years to come.

Sunblock is an important item to include with summer fun. Protect your sensitive skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

You have been hearing about detox diets and detox programmes for a pretty long time now. While several health and fitness magazines and articles on the internet list the endless virtues of a total detox programme, there are conflicting reports doing the rounds which state just the reverse – that a detox programme neither helps you nor does it cause any harm.

But before discussing the merits and drawbacks of a detox programme, let me first explain the basics of a detox diet.

What is a detox programme or a detox diet?

A detox programme will cleanse the stomach, the bowel, the liver and the kidneys, in fact your entire system and involves a combination of methods through taking herbal supplements, sticking to an effective exercise program and eating special foods.

What are the foods that you usually eat on a Detox programme?

Maybe your heart will sink when you hear this but a detox diet involves the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables of all kinds, preferably organic fruits and veggies and fruit juices. Some include detox oils like lemon oil, mandarin oil, fennel oil, juniper oil, angelica oil, juniper oil, grape fruit juice and oil and various other kinds of oil and detox herbs. Each and every kind of fresh fruit and vegetable that you can lay your hands on should be consumed. Along with these, it’s best to eat pulses, legumes, beans with brown rice and various kinds of fibrous food items.

Detox programme benefits

By adhering to a detox programme for 3 – 7 days, you will begin to purge your body toxins. An effective detoxifying diet will help to cure diseases and fill you with energy, making you feel recharged and it can remove impurities from your blood. Many obese people take to detox diets every now and then to detox the chemicals that prevent the weight control system working. Others do it to give their bodies as spring clean.

A word of caution regarding detox programme

Teenagers, people suffering from eating disorders, people with very low blood pressure or weakness or suffering from diabetes, pregnant or breastfeeding mothers should stay away from detox diets. If you are chronically ill then it’s best to get the guidance of a health practitioner, doctor or naturopath who is knowledgeable and experienced in detox. Another thing that you need to keep in mind is that cleansing can become addictive.

A detox programme may involve a 2 – 3 day juice fast. Beyond that if you continue, you may start to feel depleted of energy if it is your first cleanse. Some people prefer the lemonade diet where you survive on a diet of maple syrup, cayenne pepper and lemon juice or lime juice concoction for at least ten days.

Choose your detox programme wisely and you will feel great.
