The internet, newspapers, magazine, TV talk shows and other places are filled with ads or information about what ED is and the promotion of a fast and easy cure. With all this information being passed, many women are now asking, what can I do at help my man if he should experience erectile dysfunction?

The first thing that many doctors will recommend to any male experiencing erectile problems is certain life style changes. Any assistance that a woman can provide in achieving these changes could greatly assist in the treatment of ED.

Lifestyle changes are much easier to accomplish if someone is not trying to do them alone. Working together with someone that you care about to make these changes increases the probability of success in making the change. The most common changes are:

Cutting back or elimination of the use of alcohol, tobacco products and illegal drugs.

Changing prescription medications.

Reducing stress that is experienced by the individual

Improving diet to a more well-balanced diet, including foods from all the recommended food groups while reducing fat, sweets and other non-nutritious foods.

Start or increase exercise or physical activities.

For many men, erectile dysfunction may have been caused by some type of psychological source. A close review of the relationship between the man and woman can expose any number of reasons that could be causing the man to experience stress while trying to achieve an erection.

These reasons may be as normal as concern about financial difficulties or a sickness in the family or work related. However, the problem could be some deeper problem such as unreasonable guilt about something in the past or inhibiting attitudes towards sex which were learned earlier in life and are now surfacing.

Performance anxiety is also a very common issue that many men are finding ways to cope with. The recent explosion of graphic movies, pornography, romance novels and other media have presented an unrealistic expectation for some men to meet. As their concern for not being able to perform to the level in these various ways increases, it has an effect on their sexual ability.

A close loving relationship, in which expectations are fully understood and reasonable, will do wonders to decrease the stress from performance anxiety and increase the ability of the man to succeed in obtaining and maintaining an erection.

Improvements to the environment and atmosphere in which sexual encounters occur can greatly assist in overcoming any temporary erectile dysfunction that a man could be experiencing. Those things that most women like for a sexual encounter, like a warm room, dim lights, soft music and low stress, will do wonders for improving the sexual encounter.

An understanding attitude in that no matter whatever happens, whether an erection occurs or not, that the man is still important and loved will do wonders for overcoming the problem. If this does not work, after several attempts, the problem could be more serious and you should encourage your man to talk to his doctor for appropriate treatment.

More that 75 % of the men with ED do not seek treatment and instead suffer in silence. Do not let you man be one of these, encourage him to seek the help if he truly needs it.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) represents inability to achieve or maintain erection with sufficient rigidity and duration to permit satisfactory sexual performance.

There are many causes, psychological, neurological, physical and other associated medical conditions such as diabetes mellitus, heart disease, hypertension and cigarette smoking which result in ED.

Currently, various treatment options are available for erectile dysfunction. They are PDE5 inhibitors, injection therapy, other oral prescription medicine, vacuum devices, surgical implants, herbal or over-the-counter medications.

The FDA does not approve over-the-counter medicines or herbal remedies for erectile dysfunction, as these are not under its jurisdiction. So, those interested in using herbal medications are advised to consult their physicians so as to determine the appropriate herb, dosage and side-effects.

Some of the herbal remedies used for correcting erectile dysfunction are:

L-arginine: It is an amino acid used by body to make nitric oxide which signals smooth muscle around the blood vessels leading to relaxation and this process dilates the blood vessels and helps in increase blood flow. Relaxation of smooth muscle in the penis leads to enhanced blood flow and further leading to an erection. L-arginine can be found naturally in food such as meat, poultry, dairy and fish and is available as oral L-arginine supplement.

Propionyl-L-Carnitine: Propionyl-L-carnitine enhances and improves erectile function, orgasm, sexual intercourse satisfaction, and general sexual well-being.

Gingko: This herb is used by people who experience sexual dysfunction as a side effect caused by antidepressant drugs. This herb relaxes smooth muscle and enhances blood flow inside penis. It has 50% success rate as per one study.

Zinc: High level of mineral zinc deficiency which is associated with diabetes, long-term use of diuretics, digestive disorders, and certain liver and kidney diseases, sometimes leads to erectile dysfunction.

Ashwagandha: The herb ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) which is also called Indian Ginseng increases stamina, energy, and sexual function. Side-effects of ashwagandha include drowsiness.

Yohimbe: This is a bark of West African yohimbe tree which is a source of yohimbine. Yohimbine is a compound which stimulates blood flow to the penis thus increasing libido and decreasing the time between ejaculations. Side effects generally include anxiety, dizziness, nausea, and drop in blood pressure, fatigue, abdominal pain, hallucinations, and paralysis. Due to its fatal qualities it is generally not recommended.

Tongkat ali: It works by increasing level of hormone testosterone. Testosterone is responsible for the growth and development of penis, testicles, prostate, scrotum and seminal vesicles. Normal testosterone levels help in maintaining energy level, fertility, as well as sexual desire.

Tribulus terrestris: It is herb which has been used in traditional medicines of China for centuries. Tribulus is often used for infertility, low libido and erectile dysfunction.

Gamma-Butyrolactone (GBL): GBL can be found in products which are marketed for improvement in sexual function. This substance can cause toxic and fatal side-effects which include seizures and coma.

Thus, with so many choices before a person who wants to improve erectile dysfunction with herbal remedies, it is imperative to choose the correct remedy after evaluating the risks factors and side effects. One must always consult physician and herbalist before undergoing such remedial measures.

For those men who are having problems in getting an erection, the cause may not be physical or due to any medication that they may be taking. It could be psychological, particularly in case they are still having nighttime erections.

A simplest way to know the exact reason is to take a very easy self-test at home that involves using 4-6 postage stamps.

The method to conduct Stamp Test:

1. Select three nights to conduct this test when one can get uninterrupted sleep. Do not drink alcohol and do not take any sleep-inducing medicine for at least two days prior to the test.

2. Every night wear briefs to sleep, bringing out penis through the fly and with very little pubic hair.

3. Wrap a strip of 4-6 stamps around the shaft of penis in such a way that it overlaps the stamps and moistens the end of one to seal the ring.

4. After the seal has dried, replace the penis carefully inside brief by keeping the underwear on so as to protect the stamps from falling off.

5. Then check in the morning whether the stamp ring has been broken at the perforations or not. If awakened at night due to the tearing of the stamps, check for erection and rigidity of the same.

The Result

If the ring of stamps breaks at the perforations even once in three nights, it means that erection problem is due to psychological cause. If the stamps do not break during the three nights’ period of testing, the erection problem is related to a physical condition or is due to impotence-causing medication.

Inform doctor or psychologist about these results of stamp test. This could help in diagnosis and treatment of erectile problem as there is no substitute to an open discussion with physician about erectile dysfunction.

This test may help start the conversation with doctor and also give some questions to ask. The results can give doctor a better idea of what the patient has been experiencing and how he feels about it. Then the doctor can quiz the patient and check the intensity of ED on Erectile Dysfunction Intensity Scale.

The intensity is calculated based on set of five questions and answers to these questions and the scores are awarded from 5-25.

The result of severity classification can be done on following basis:

If the total score is between 5 and 10, it represents severe case of erectile dysfunction.

If the total score is between 11 and 15, it represents moderate case of erectile dysfunction.

If the total score is between 16 and 20, it represents mild case of erectile dysfunction.

If the total score is between 21 and 25, it represents normal case of erectile dysfunction.

In the end, it can be said that even if one is experiencing difficulty with erections, but that does not cause much concern, one should consult healthcare professionals so that they can identify any underlying cause of the problem.

There are a wide variety of treatments for ED. Some of the more common are:

Chemical Medications: Viagra and similar drugs works directly to expand the arteries and allow greater blood flow to the penis. This increased blood flow will cause an erection when sexually aroused.

Penile Injections: The patient or his partner injects a powerful muscle relaxant into the base of the penis. This causes the muscle tissue to relax and allows increased blood into the penis causing an erection.

Penile Implants: This is an irreversible surgical procedure. There are various types of implants but the most common is the inflatable. The inflatable model is implanted into the penis with a saline reservoir and pump either in the abdomen or scrotum. When inflated by the pump, fluid from the reservoir flows into the inflatable balloons, creating an erection.
