An innovative less invasive surgery called Sinuplasty is considered to be far less distressing on the nasal tissue than traditional sinus surgery due to the fact there is no cutting involved.

Sinuplasty utilizes a thin balloon, much like a strong angioplasty balloon, in order to open the sinus passages and provide easier breathing and in most cases, helping to get rid of serious sinus headaches. Just as for heart vessels, the balloon is placed in the right position, then it’s inflated, then deflated and eliminated. That brings about permanent widening in the important areas leading to the sinuses though leaving the nose lining unharmed rather than disrupting the lining as occurs in typical sinus surgery.

Sinuplasty surgery is used for people with chronic sinus headaches or serious pain and people who have perhaps been afraid of the occasional nosebleeds. And many don’t like the packs they have seen normally using the standard sinus surgery.

This particular new outpatient procedure is revolutionary. The biggest benefit of Sinuplasty is a lesser amount of bleeding along with a shorter recuperation time. Most people will be able to return to work in twenty-four hours or so.

People really feel much better quite quickly. This is a shorter recovery than standard surgery. That’s because Sinuplasty is usually less traumatic to the sinus tissue. Unlike traditional surgery, there’s no cutting that would lengthen recovery time. In fact when it initially came out some doctors were extremely skeptical. But now many ear, nose and throat doctors are recommending Sinuplasty.

It works like this. A doctor visualizes the area using a lighted scope. After that a very fine, lighted wire, threaded by way of a special balloon, is simply inserted into the passages.

Similar to angioplasty, the balloon opens narrowed drainage channels in the sinuses to allow for proper drainage.

The balloon will be able to simply open to a certain size – inflated with a calibrated device. Colored markings show the doctor how far to insert the balloon.

This just goes in and after it blows up, it fractures some of the bone. So this enlarges the opening which means you have a small, teeny opening which is not functioning, then you make it bigger, although certainly not too big, so it will be actually be a lot more natural. Also it is not going to bleed as much, heals more rapidly and you could possibly get inside some of the inaccessible sinuses. Note we have four sets of sinus cavities in our heads.

The balloon brings one more advantage … decreased surgical risks associated with scarring to the treated area due to the elimination of cutting. And scar tissue can cause the nasal area to become narrow. And you don’t want that. Also the imaging with Sinuplasty is more preferable than with traditional surgical treatment.

But before one even considers Sinuplasty sinus surgery they should do everything possible to heal their sinus problems with home remedies, natural treatment or alternative methods. Surgery does not always help. And there is always the possibility of narrowing the passages and that can’t be reversed. Plus the risks that come with any surgery are going to be there. Try all other methods first.

If you think you may have a sinus infection or are just wondering what to look for if you don’t have one yet, the following sinus symptoms may give you an idea of what to look for. Generally you’ll have at least one or more of these symptoms. They don’t always mean you have an infection going on, it could be simply an inflammation of the sinuses called sinusitis (an inflammation is also present in an infection.) Sinusitis can be acute (meaning a sudden onset) or chronic meaning a longer term.)

There are four sets of pairs of sinuses. These are air-filled cavities. They’re connected to a space between the nose and the nasal passage. Their purpose is to protect the skull, lessen its weight and let the voice resonate in it.

These sinus cavities are called frontal — located in the forehead, maxillary located behind the cheek bones, ethmoid located between the eyes and sphenoid located deeper behind the eyes. The sinuses protect you from foreign organisms like viruses, bacteria and fungi and from pollutants and allergens. Any of these organisms can stick to the mucous, cilia (little hairs) and cells lining the sinuses and cause a sinus infection. Also your symptoms could give you an idea which set of sinuses is affected.

Often when people don’t feel good, start getting more tired, think they may be getting a cold or actually think they have one already, it may just be the beginning of a sinus infection. The symptoms can be confusing because so many of the cold symptoms mimic sinus infection symptoms. But with a little detective work you can figure out which it is.

If you’re starting to get a sore throat, nine times out of ten it will be from a sinus infection or irritation in the early stages rather than strep throat or a cold. You can easily tell by gargling with a little salt water — we call it saline solution in the hospital. Use about one half of a measuring teaspoon of salt to one cup of pure or warm spring water. If it feels less irritated than it’s likely sinus drainage that has caused the soreness and irritation.

Some of the more common symptoms of a sinus infection are: fatigue, tiredness you can’t explain, nasal congestion, drainage from your nose down into the back of your throat, coughing, sneezing, pressure or pain anywhere in the area of teeth, cheeks, jaw, forehead and top of the head, head pain when bending over or feel worse when you lie down or stand up– this will depend on which set of sinuses are involved.

You can get rid of an infection or sinus problem at home with natural treatment. These are just a few of the sinus infection symptoms to help you determine if you have a sinus infection or a cold. It will get better and you can get some relief and heal it yourself with some fast treatment at home. You don’t have to suffer.

You have four sets of sinus cavities. Sometime it’s good to know which sinuses are causing your sinus infection, whether you have one now or not. And the sinus infection symptoms can be different with each infection because it may be involving a different set of sinuses.

If the ethmoid sinuses are involved you can have nasal congestion and a discharge, commonly called postnasal drip, and this drainage will drain into the throat. You can have pain and pressure around the eye in its inner corner or even down one side of your nose. You could have a sinus headache around your eye or in the temple area.
You symptoms can be worse if you cough or do any straining or lie down, especially on your back. Sinuses prefer the head in an upright position if infected. And you may have a temperature (fever).

If the maxillary sinuses, which lie behind the cheek bones, are involved you could have pain across the cheek bones, under or around the eye region or around the upper teeth. Many people go to the dentist complaining of a toothache, when it’s actually the maxillary sinuses causing the problem. You can feel pressure or pain on just one side or on both sides. You can feel pain when bending forward and feel better when sitting down in a reclining position.

With frontal sinuses, which lie behind the forehead on one side or both sides, you may have a severe headache in the forehead. You may or may not have a temperature. You’ll feel worse when lying down. You may have discharge draining down into your throat.

With the sphenoid sinuses involved you may have a headache on top of the head because they lie so deep behind the nasal passages. It could be on one side or both. It could also involve the forehead and eye. You may or may not have a temperature. Pain will be worse when lying on your back or if you bend your head forward. If the sinuses get too inflamed they may cause some pressure that involves your vision, you can have nasal discharge. You may also have halitosis (bad breath) from the discharge in your throat.

These are just a few of the sinus infection symptoms to look for if you have a sinus problem or think you have an infection. You can treat yourself naturally. You can get rid of a sinus infection at home with natural home treatments. You don’t want to use medications or drugs because they may make it worse and you’ll have to deal with the side effects. You can get better. Infections will run their course and you can shorten it quite a bit with the right at-home treatment.
