We see health problems, such as chronic headaches, begin to manifest as we grow older and we assume it’s just because we’re growing older, and our bodies are getting worn down, aging and changing. We’re human; it’s the natural course. But the truth isn’t that simple.

Symptoms Can Take Years to Manifest -

The truth is that most, if not all, of the health problems we experience as we age have their roots in choices we made when we were young. Just because a condition wasn’t symptomatic when you were younger doesn’t mean it wasn’t there, lying dormant, waiting until you were weaker to strike. Or it was in the development stage, preparing to take you over, ready to kick you as soon as you were down.

Perceiving Potential and Preventing Manifestation -

Children as young as four can experience migraines. Usually, there are genetic factors. Motion sickness in children can indicate dormant migraine potential, especially when there’s a family history of migraines or vascular headaches. Migraines will also manifest in children as colic, abdominal pains, vomiting, and dizziness. It’s likely that these children will eventually become adult migraine sufferers, but like a lot of conditions to which our bodies are predisposed, I will maintain that it’s not unavoidable.

Just as many of the ailments from which we suffer as we age are not necessarily inevitable. In our day, age and society, with all of the scientific knowledge we have at our disposal, we still tend to overlook prevention-based measures. We have too much of a “cross-that-bridge-when-I-come-to-it” mentality.

Now, I’m the last person to condemn living in the moment; I think that’s important, too, but I’m also a proponent of everything in moderation. If you can in some way prolong the number of moments you have to live in and the quality of those moments, then why wouldn’t you want to do that?

If you notice that your child has a predisposition or genetic tendency toward migraines, you can do something about it. Of course you always want to consult a healthcare professional on safe dosage, especially for children, but in general, important nutrients for treatment and prevention of migraines or other headaches include the following: calcium and magnesium, coenzyme Q10 and coenzyme A, dimethylglycine and trimethylglycine, DL-phenylalanine, an essential fatty acid complex or evening primrose oil, 5-hydroxytryptophan, a multivitamin and mineral formula, rutin, a vitamin B complex in addition to extra vitamins B2 and B3, pantothenic acid or royal jelly, and vitamin B6.

You’re Always Younger Than You Could Be -

No matter what your age, this goes for you, too-not just your children. It’s important for all of us to grasp that disease does not begin with the symptoms, that it can have its roots years before, but we still shouldn’t despair, no matter how young we don’t feel. I believe that our bodies, whatever their age, have an amazing ability to heal themselves, given the right assistance-and you’re never as old as you could be.

As Simon and Garfunkel put it: “I am older than I once was, and younger than I’ll be; that’s not unusual.” Help yourself get older!

It must be just about everyone’s worst nightmare: an elderly relative, living alone, falls and gets injured. Treating injuries in the elderly takes a bit more patience and understanding than with other age groups because of the odd set of circumstances that usually surround such challenges.

Unlike when a child gets injured and a parent can take over authoritatively, with the elderly you are dealing with another adult. You can’t just issue orders – instead, you need to incorporate everyone in the decision making process.

Fractures are the Most Common Injuries Facing the Elderly -

Multiple factors make fractures more common with elderly individuals. As a person ages, their balance and special awareness can wane. Weaker muscles and porous bones provide a perfect setting for fractures and breaks. It is estimated that 35-40% of adults over the age of 65 fall at least once each year.

The Center for Disease Control, CDC, sites hip fractures as being the most serious of such injuries. Approximately 20% of elderly patients who experience a hip fracture die within a year of the injury. Individuals who lived independently before a hip fracture are much more likely to enter a nursing home after the incident.

Addressing the Higher Fall Risk Helps -

Since the elderly are more likely to fall, and those falls are more likely to result in fractures, it is important to head off the problem before the tumble. Regular eye exams help keep vision acute, preventing falls over unseen objects. Reducing fall hazards in the home and adding lighting helps as well.

Enrolling in exercise classes, especially in yoga and tai chi, helps maintain strength and flexibility. Balance is improved, making falls less likely.

Regularly reviewing medications with your physician reduces the chances of drug interactions and over medication, both of which lead to poor balance. Additionally, taking calcium supplements or medications for osteoporosis can help prevent additional bone loss as time goes by.

Future Care for an Injured Senior -

Because the elderly heal more slowly than younger adults, the quality of care is critical. Dealing with a doctor who specializes in geriatrics may be the best option. Fractures in particular are tricky since the bone needs to be well stabilized to heal properly over the extended period needed.

Seniors who experience their first fragility fractures are twice as likely to incur a second such fracture within a year. Prevention is critical if one is to prevent a downward spiral of injuries and poor health after the original injury. With new medications and improved awareness, secondary fractures can be minimized.

Don’t Accept Aging as an Excuse -

One of the most difficult problems facing the elderly, on top of their higher incidence of injury, is that of prejudice. Too many health care workers attribute everything to a person’s age, and don’t take enough time to look closely at the factors causing a problem. No good doctor will dismiss a problem solely on the basis of his patient’s age.

Just as age isn’t the cause of many injuries suffered, it isn’t an excuse to avoid doing the things you know will keep you healthy. A good diet, taking medications in a timely manner, and keeping your brain and body active are all part of preventing injuries in the elderly.

Whether you woke up this morning with neck pain or it was a gradual process that took over day after day, there are a number of exercises that you can do to regain your comfort and movement.

Muscles to Target -

Neck pain rarely stems just from neck muscles. Tight shoulders, clenched jaws and upper back strains can all lead to neck pain. Exercises need to target not just the neck muscles but those around the neck that help support the head.

Your goal with these exercises is not just to stretch out tight muscles, but also to strengthen weakened muscles and increase blood flow.

The SCM – Sterno Cleido Mastoid -

When you look at your neck from the front you should see two muscles, one on each side, that stretch in an angle from your sternum to a point behind your ears. This is the SCM.

This muscle frequently tightens when people work at a computer or drive all day. To stretch it turn your head to one side – let’s say the right. Hold your left temple with your right hand and place your left hand behind your neck.

Gently press against your hands as if you are trying to turn your head to the left. Use no more than 20% of your strength. Hold for about 5 seconds and slowly release the tension. Repeat on the other side. Do this three times in each direction.

The Neck Extensors -

This set of muscles lays along your spine and helps support your head in its upright position. They experience a lot of tension.

To stretch these muscles tuck your chin to your chest. Place both hands behind your head, as if you are doing a sit up, and gently, again using no more than 20% of your strength, push as if you are trying to straighten up your head. After about 5 seconds release slowly and repeat 3 times.

Muscles on the Sides of your Neck -

Next you need to address those muscles that come up the side of your neck. Sitting or standing straight, bend your neck to one side as if you are trying to touch your shoulder with your ear. Hold that position for about 5 seconds and straighten up. For some extra stretch you can gently hold your head and resist the pressure of a lightly placed hand.

Addressing the Shoulders -

As stated earlier, neck pain can stem from tight shoulder muscles. You should take some time to rotate your shoulders both forwards and back. Now, raise both shoulders towards your ears, in a shrug, and let them drop back down ten times.

Finding the Source -

Neck problems are often caused by poor posture. If you suspect this is the root of your problem you will need to do some investigative work on your own behalf. For example, if you consistently have neck pain after work, a poorly placed computer is likely the cause. If you wake up daily with neck pain, a new pillow may be in order.

If there is no established pattern for your neck pain, you may want to consider keeping a diary of your daily activities and when you experience pain. With a little work and diligence you will soon figure out the source of your discomfort.

In today’s economy, if something doesn’t happen instantly it’s almost as if it’s not happening at all. Most of the time when we experience a headache it appears to come from way out of left field, and our quick remedy is usually an Aspirin. But what if your headache is stemming from a more serious cause?

The “Brain Freeze” Headache -

A cold stimulus headache is one that is a direct result of consuming a cold drink or dessert too quickly. The urge to devour that cool refreshing drink, or dive into that tower of chocolate covered ice cream can override a person’s sense of caution.

Remember, the inside of our mouth stays at around 75 degrees. So one of the reasons why the cool treat tastes so good is because it immediately affects our warm taste buds. The headache occurs when the mouth’s palate doesn’t have time to adjust. Even our throats have to be prepared to handle ice cold drinking pleasures.

Learning the Lesson from “Ice Cream” Headaches -

Just like slowing down to enjoy our cooler refreshments can keep us from experiencing a short but painful headache, eating slower can help us maintain healthy eating habits.

One of the most damaging eating habits is the practice of enjoying entire meals while watching a favorite television program. This is a dangerous routine because it allows enjoying your dinner to become a mindless act. There is little to no focus on how fast you are eating and the quantities at which you are taking it in.

Recent studies are even suggesting that eating fast overrides your body’s natural ability to relate when you are full; which is why people who eat fast usually eat twice if not three times as much as those who eat slowly.

When the Pressure is High the Head Pain is Strong -

Hypertension, better known as high blood pressure, is one of the most common medical problems today. While many people contribute high sodium intake and lack of exercise as the main reason, the facts of what exactly triggers the condition are still being studied.

A truth about high blood pressure is that it is usually marked by headaches. Throbbing pain that doesn’t find true relief from over the counter medications and occurs more than twice a week is something that any one should take seriously.

Saying Goodbye to Headaches -

Obesity can be a personal struggle for several reasons: a family history of being overweight, a new life change, or just bad eating habits can all be stumbling blocks.

Eating slowly can help you avoid “brain freezes”, and is also a good way of establishing portion control. Eating foods that are low in sodium and fat is a good way of keeping blood pressure down and trimming the waistline.

If all of these tips sound like good, reasonable ways to take care of your headaches then you should try visiting a health chiropractic office. Bariatric chiropractors are staffed at the more progressive facilities, and are more than happy to help you get your life back on the right track.

Having the opportunity to obtain medical procedures and professional advice at chiropractic offices can do more than stop pain, it can help you shape up something that you’ve been meaning to do for years.

One of the most common pain related complaints is the headache. Tension headaches, stress headaches, migraine headaches, you name it! Each of these types of headaches has some way to make your head flat out hurt. However, of all the complaints, the most common type is the tension headache.

It is estimated that as many as 90% of all adults have dealt with a tension headache at some point in their life. In fact, many of these people will have to deal with these headaches on a regular and ongoing basis.

Headache? Or is it Another Problem? -

Most of the time headaches go away on their own. However, when a headache does not go away or when it comes on a regular basis, then it may be a symptom of an underlying problem. When it becomes so common that it interferes with everyday life, treatment must be sought immediately.

Causes You May Not Know About -

Tension headaches are easy to diagnose and treat. In general, people recognize when stress has overwhelmed them causing a headache. They know when it has become too much and they are in need of some relaxation. This is when they exercise, meditate or seek out massage therapy. However, you may not know about other causes.

” Sinus Pressure – Sure, you know when you are sick and stuffy – but you may not know that changes in oxygen levels can trigger a sinus headache. Similar to an arthritic knee that can sense a rainstorm, headaches can be a sign of changes in the barometric pressure outside.

” Weather Headaches – Some people refer to this pressure change as a “weather headache.” When it gets hot outside or the humidity changes rapidly, the changes in the atmosphere can trigger painful headaches. While they are not the same as sinus pressure headaches, they are very similar.

It is believed that “weather headaches” are caused by barometric changes in the body. Anything that can affect your body’s natural barometric pressure may trigger a “weather headache.” High humidity and rapid weather cycling has been linked to specific headaches.

” Blood Vessels – A variety of factors can cause the blood vessels in your body to change in diameter, causing pain. The most common method is known as a “caffeine headache.”

Caffeine literally changes the size of the vessels. As long as you are supplying your body with caffeine, the vessels stay the same. However, if you suddenly stop drinking caffeine, then your blood vessels quickly change causing the withdrawal symptom, which results in the infamous “caffeine headache.”

While caffeine is the most well known, it is not the only thing that can change the size of your blood vessels. In fact, the majority of migraine medicines do just that. This effect is great if you are trying to reverse the blood vessel change.

However, if your headache is caused by shrinking vessels and you take a medication to shrink the vessels, then all you achieve is a more painful headache. Therefore, it is important to know which kind of headache you get. Unfortunately, most of the time the only way you find out is by taking the wrong medicine.

Treatment for Headaches -

The best treatment is determining the cause. Tension headaches are relieved by stress relieving activities such as massage. Caffeine headaches are relieved my caffeine found in most over the counter migraine medications. Other headaches will require a doctor or chiropractor.

The best treatment is finding out which type of headache you have and then treating it accordingly.
