If your kids are involved with sports such as football, softball, hockey, soccer, gymnastics or even martial arts, you know that they are operating in an incredibly competitive environment. Kids spend hours on end practicing, working out and competing in their sport, which begins to take a significant toll on their developing bodies.

All parents want their kids to be the best athletes they can be. Chiropractic care can help your child be a better athlete while improving their performance and helping to prevent some injuries. In this article we are going to take a look at some strategies for optimizing your child’s performance through solid preparation, prevention of injuries and recovery.

Prepare for Sports Performance -

Proper nutrition: Make sure your athlete always eats a good, healthy breakfast. Avoid sugar-laden cereals that give a sudden burst of energy but then leave them feeling drained. Opt instead for a bowl of oatmeal with fresh fruit, or a whole grain muffin.

Kids need a varied, healthy diet rich in all kinds of vegetables, fresh fruits, whole grains and lean proteins. Hydration is vitally important. Offer your kids lots of water with lemon rather than those sugary, salty sports drinks.

Provide healthy snacks after each game or performance such as, a healthy trail mix that you make yourself, granola bars, carrots, apples, low fat cheese and whole grain crackers.

Adequate rest: When trying to balance both sports and schoolwork, sometimes kids end up staying up too late to do homework. Help your child to manage their time among all of their obligations so that they can be sure to get at least eight hours of sleep each night. Good sleep and nutrition habits lay the foundation for peak athletic performance.

Prevention of Sports Injuries -

Working with a chiropractor is an effective adjunct to proper preparation for athletic performance. A Chiropractor can provide adjustments, therapeutic exercises and stretches along with nutritional counseling to help support your child’s increased performance and reduced incidence of injuries.

Proper training:
Are your kids getting proper training for their sport? Without solid preparation from a coach who is knowledgeable about the sport and about physical developmental issues with children, kids can end up getting unnecessary injuries.

Warm-ups:
Kids need to warm up and stretch using appropriate exercises for their sport. A proper warm-up and stretching regimen can prepare them to play and help protect them from injury.

Proper equipment:
Children need the right equipment that fits them and is appropriate for their sport such as helmets, shoes, protective pads, etc.

Cool-downs:
After a game or performance, make sure that your child gets a chance to do long, slow cool-down stretches and cool-down exercises.

Recovery from Injuries -

If your child somehow ends up getting injured, a chiropractor can help them to properly recover from injury so that they can resume their sport safely.

While your young athlete might think that they are impervious to injuries, taking a few preventative steps can set them up for a much more rewarding and successful career and can teach them solid practices that will last their entire lives.

Back pain comes in as many varieties as there are people. No two people will have the exact same back ache symptoms regardless of the cause of the pain. Your back pain might be centered in one spot or radiate out like a band across your back. In addition to the back pain you might also feel other sensations such as weakness, numbness, or tingling that can travel down the legs.

If you are someone who suffers from chronic, achy back pain that comes and goes and makes your life miserable by interrupting and limiting your enjoyment of life’s activities, then you might think about some ways that you can take care of your back. Some kinds of back pain can be prevented through simple activities that you can do every day. Let’s take a look at how you can build and maintain the health and strength of your back.

Develop Healthy Posture -

Bad posture, which means slumped shoulders, head just hanging and knees locked, puts stress on the spine and it does not allow you to take in full, deep breaths to fully oxygenate your blood. When you practice good posture, your body feels more in alignment and it relieves that pressure on your spine.

To practice good posture, stand up straight. Press your shoulders back; tuck your chin in a little bit and keep you knees straight. Occasionally check in with your body and correct your posture, especially if you do work that requires you to sit all day. It will feel awkward at first, when you straighten up and sit and stand tall, but after a while it will feel natural and you will find that your spine feels good when it is held in balance.

Build Strong Muscles in Your Core and Back -

Some back pain is the result of sprains, strains or overuse. If you take the time to build and strengthen the muscles in your core–abdominals and transverse abdominals–which support your spine and keep it stable during strenuous activities, you can prevent the back pain that comes from those kinds of activities.

Doing these exercise programs consistently can help prevent back pain:

” Pilates – Exercise programs such as Pilates, which focus on strengthening your core and toning all of your muscles are an effective way to prevent back pain while also toning your entire body.

” Yoga – Yoga strengthens and tones the body while teaching you to relax. There are specific poses that can help you develop core strength and build up the muscles in your back.

” Weight training – Work with a certified personal trainer to develop a routine where you can start out with low weights and slowly progress to heavier weights to build strength in the muscles that support your back, your neck, shoulders and legs. A strong back is less likely to have as much pain as a weak, sedentary back.

Remember Proper Lifting Procedures -

Often people will throw their back out when lifting an object without using proper form. First make sure that the object is not too heavy for you to pick up. Bend your knees and lift using the strength of your legs, which are the strongest muscles in your body.

Some types of back pain can be prevented by strengthening your back and developing healthy posture and lifting habits.

Drive-thrus, microwaves, navigational systems, and cellular phones have all contributed to our “want it now” society. Gone are the days of uncorrectable beauty blemishes and back pain. Now, thanks to the new advances of modern medical practices there are simple ways to relieve back pain.

What to do for Back Pain that is a Result of a Car Accident -

There are very few things in life that are as frightening as the everyday risk of being involved in an auto accident. Even with recent laws that ban driver distractions, recklessness still plays a big factor.

One reach for a soda as the light turns red, or misread signal at a traffic stop, and your world could change.

The presence of an ambulance and fire truck is usually the first sign that help has arrived. At the slightest sign of bodily injuries, a first responder will more than likely suggest a visit to the hospital.

Thankfully, many auto accidents end with people who are more shaken up rather than seriously injured. If you are a part of that fortunate number it’s still a good idea to schedule a medical appointment.

Chiropractic health practices are an excellent place to go when wanting to make sure that no spinal injury was done during a car accident. Usually, a good office will offer same day visits to help expedite the process of returning to life as normal.

Falling into Back Pain -

Slips and falls don’t stop happening as you get older – as a matter of fact, they become more dangerous and frequent. In most cases, when falling produced back pain, the actual damage of the fall began before the body came into contact with a floor surface.

Often times when adults fall they do so after attempting to regain their balance. We can resort to flailing our arms, or twisting our bodies in the best effort to avoid the fall. Yet, it is because of these maneuvers that our bodies fall awkwardly to the ground.

It is important that after a serious fall you begin to stand slowly, or wait for assistance. Then, as soon as possible seek chiropractic care for an evaluation. Let the trained eyes of a medical professional tell you if the way you are healing is correct. It has always been a wise rule to be safe rather than sorry.

Growing up Expecting Back Pain -

Obesity is a growing problem in America today. According to recent studies, nearly 35% of Americans are obese, and nearly 33% are overweight. The numbers are overwhelming – so many people are tragically suffering because of their body size.

Taking charge of your life can sometimes be an intimidating step. Seemingly, everyday you can find ways to improve the quality of your life.

Chiropractic offices and their staffs realize that losing weight can be a life-changing challenge.
Bariatric chiropractors are always on staff to advise adults on how to lose weight. They can offer useful tips and provide beneficial procedures to help lose the weight. Imagine being able to either avoid back pain, or stop it.

There are a lot of medications available to temporarily relieve the discomfort of back pain. The easiest ways are outlets for a lifetime solution, and speaking with, scheduling an evaluation, or just getting needing advise from a chiropractic health practice is simple and productive.

Before you schedule a discectomy for your back pain, you need to try spinal decompression. They are both used to treat herniated disc pain but spinal decompression is much less invasive.

What is a Herniated Disc? -

There are many tiny discs in your spine. These act like cushions to protect the spine. The outer portion is called annulus fibrosus while the inner part is called nucleus pulposus.

Problems occur when the outer part is weakened allowing it to tear. It is through the tiny tears that the inner part leaks out. This inner part puts pressure on the nerves causing pain, weakness and tingling in the back and legs.

What is a Discectomy? -

A discectomy is a very invasive medical procedure that removes the herniated disc though spinal surgery. Generally, it is only performed as a last resort. To qualify for a discectomy, patients need to be unresponsive to traditional non-surgical methods of treatment including:
” Anti-inflammatory medication
” Traction
” Physical therapy
” Epidural injections
” Spinal Decompression

How is a Discectomy Performed? -

An open discectomy is the traditional method of surgery. The doctor makes an incision in your back near the herniated disc. Then the doctor proceeds to remove the muscle and tissue from the affected disc.

Once the muscle and tissue are out of the way, the doctor removes the herniated disc. After the removal is complete, the doctor puts the muscle and tissue back and sews up the incision.

What is Microdiscectomy? -

A microdiscectomy is similar to the traditional discectomy. However, it is a newer treatment that is less invasive than the traditional discectomy. This is due to the use of magnifying instruments. In addition, the procedure uses special muscle retractors to hold the area open during the procedure.

The main difference is in the size of the incision. With the use of the special magnification and retractors, the surgeon is able to use a smaller incision. The result is less pain for the patient.

What is Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression? -

Non-surgical spinal decompression is a process where a chiropractor uses a machine approved by the FDA to treat herniated discs. The process requires the patient to go into the office and lie on a table. At this point, the chiropractor straps the head and neck in. The machine then gently and slowly stretches the back.

The machine is so sensitive that it can detect when a muscle spasm is about to happen. When this occurs, the machine stops stretching to prevent the muscle from having a spasm.

Most patients do not experience and pain or discomfort from the procedure. They go home as soon as it is over. However, the procedure must be used more than once. Only a chiropractor can tell you how many treatments you will need.

Where to Find a Chiropractor -

Not all chiropractors are the same. You will want to find a chiropractor that is associated with a guarantee. Yes, chiropractors can offer guarantees too. Find one that guarantees same day service and friendly service.

Back pain is usually the last thing a person thinks about when applying for a job. Most of the time we consider the wage offered and the distance between the job location and home. No one usually thinks about the risk of suffering from back pain at work.

Conveyer Belt Back Pain -

In recent years society has began to ask this question: “how do factory workers do it?” The average consumer during a shopping experience will notice the shelves lined with q-tips, stationary cards, or tennis shoes without ever thinking about the back and hands that got them there. Now, however, with the economy taking a slow turn towards recovery, it’s almost impossible not to think about it.

Mills and factories are growing to become the largest industries in the work force, nearly 1 in 3 households know of someone who is, or has worked in a production setting. This occupation is attractive because of moderate wages and flexible hours.

The reason why this occupation is more susceptible to produce back pain is because the production facilities are often built with production in mind, and not necessarily the comfort of the worker. A person who has the job duties of constantly lifting, standing, stacking, or pulling can easily develop lower back pain.

Some studies even show that in manufacturing facilities and production sites, nearly, 3% of workforce time is lost due to lower back pain.

Cleaning Until Your Back Hurts -

Society accepts that things can and will get dirty, and because of that we need to clean. Then, towards the end of the 1990′s, we suddenly became aware of the millions of germs that surround us. With gloved hands we took cleaning to a new level called sterilizing.

Custodians are the important people who literally handle the dirty work. Places like hospitals, schools, shopping malls, and business offices would be lost without them. While it is safe to say that this isn’t everyone’s ideal occupation, it is one that is constantly in high demand.

These jobs are great at supplementing income, they often offer a considerable wage and they provide work schedules that compliment a busy life.

Unfortunately, after numerous years of mopping and bending to reach small cornered places, back pain usually sets in. Even with a back brace these jobs make it easy to strain one’s self unintentionally.

Both of these occupations are important, and are increasing in popularity. More than likely a position for a custodian or plant worker can be found available before most others. When considering working in one of these areas or even during the time of employment, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with a chiropractic office.

Chiropractic offices have a full staff of medical professionals who are more than happy to give useful tips on how to avoid developing back pain in the work place. They also focus on rehabilitating those who might already be suffering from minor to severe back pain. We all have to earn a living – it’s the back pain bonus that we want to avoid.

My mother works in the infant room of a daycare and is on her feet a lot. This has been the case the majority of her life; she’s worked at the daycare for sixteen years, before which she was a fulltime housewife, mom, and from-home childcare provider-which meant a lot of running around and not a lot of rest. When she was younger she worked in retail. She also hates wearing shoes.

A couple of years ago, she had an odd thing happen: one of her feet started hurting very badly, out of nowhere. When she went to the doctor, they told her she had a stress fracture. A cause could never really be identified, even after extensive testing. We still don’t know what caused it, but now my barefoot mom always has to wear Crocs or houseshoes even just around the house, because she can’t be without arch support.

But Are They Unexplainable? -

My point is that injuries can be weird and apparently unexplainable, not to mention come seemingly out of nowhere. I had a sore tailbone for a couple of weeks after coming home from my study-abroad semester; the only thing I could think of was that it was from riding trains and buses all over Europe.

I later developed tendonitis in my left heel and in my right elbow; the heel was probably from not stretching properly when I used to run, the elbow from the repetitive pouring motion working in coffee shops all through college.

I do believe that all injuries and ailments have explanations, and I also believe that they are frequently that obvious. Not to knock modern medicine-it’s done some amazing things-but sometimes I think it can rely too much on testing and not enough on good old-fashioned intuition and common sense. In my mom’s case, sure, they needed to eliminate possibilities such as osteoporosis and bone cancer. But sometimes the basic needs of the patient are forgotten in the process.

“I Just Want To Feel Better” -

My mom just wanted her foot to get better, and no one could really offer a viable solution. She suffered for weeks, months even. Meanwhile, I got rid of my tendonitis with simple stretches and strengthening exercises-once my herbalist told me to stop taking the high doses of over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicines that would eventually have ruined my liver. My general practitioner had told me about some exercises but also prescribed the drugs, which I never felt helped much anyway.

My mom, however, got increasingly frustrated. As far as I know, physical therapy was never suggested as an option. Nutritional deficits were explored, specifically levels of calcium and vitamin D, but I don’t believe that any supplements or foods were suggested to aid in the healing and maintenance process.

Root of the Problem, Seed of the Solution -

I believe that all so-called mysterious injuries and ailments originate in a nutritional or physical deficit of some sort, like my mom didn’t wear shoes or tend to the needs of overworked feet. I believe that if modern medicine listened to intuition and nature a little more and worked hand-in-hand with age-old natural solutions and remedies, there might be some unbelievable results, not the least of which would be a generally healthier and happier world.
