I remember when I was in elementary school, for some odd reason my third grade teacher had this classroom exercise for us. I think it was an early attempt at inculcating a respect for diversity, and as such, it was really ill-conceived. She had some of the students stand at the front of the class, and had the rest of us critique their appearance. Anything was open game, and whenever we came up with a negative criticism, she would counter with how that was really a positive, and that we were all different, and difference was good. I remember one little boy, smiling in embarrassment as he stood at the front of the room, and someone said that they didn’t like his smile. When the teacher asked why, they said that it was because his teeth weren’t white enough. She pointed out that everyone in the room had teeth that were different shades, so the fact that our classmate’s smile was a little more gray actually made him fit in even more.

In retrospect, it was really messed up, and if I found out that my children were being included in similar exercises today, I would probably do what I could to end the teacher’s career. Just the same, we did notice something at that time; that it is esthetically more desirable in our society to have whiter teeth. I personally notice when my teeth aren’t as white as I like, and I do notice it in other people as well. I would never tell anyone that I don’t like their smile because their teeth aren’t white enough, but I might think it about my own.

Luckily, these days, there are numerous teeth whiting products. My dentist had teeth whiting trays, teeth whiting gels, and several ways to implement teeth whiting strategies to make sure a patient’s smile stays white and shiny. I have seen the before and after shots at dentist offices and websites, and should the day come that I need professional teeth whiting services, I know just where to go.

So yeah, that memory from the third grade has stuck with me for a long time. Although it was a long time ago, I hope that boy’s feelings weren’t too hurt by what was said. If he was, at least now he has the option of choosing a teeth whitening system to make his smile nice and bright.

Dentists provide invaluable services in preventative and restorative care for people’s teeth and mouth. In the past decade, however, the cosmetic side of dentistry is becoming more popular than it ever has been before. People are not just going to the dentists to check for cavities or gingivitis; rather, they go to receive treatments that will give them a better looking smile. Dentists typically offer an assortment of cosmetic services, such as veneer application and tooth color restoration. But one of the most popular cosmetic dental procedures is teeth whitening.

One of the most common methods of whitening teeth is through bleaching, which if done under the supervision of a qualified dentist, is safe and effective. Bleaching allows teeth to be whitened beyond the original color of their enamel, and this can be done with different products such as gels that contain a form of bleach, usually hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide.

For those who want a significant color change, in-office whitening is usually the fastest way to achieve dramatic whitening results. In-office whitening usually entails a dentist applying a peroxide gel to the teeth and allowing the gel to remain on the teeth for a series of intervals that all add up to an hour at most.

The gel applied to the teeth usually contains a high concentration (from 9 to 40 percent) of hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is the most powerful and fast-acting substance used to whiten teeth. And during this entire procedure, the gums are protected with a paint-on rubber dam.

Although in-office whitening treatments are very effective, they can also be some of the most expensive, so those looking for a cheaper alternative often use take-home whitening kits. These whitening kits can be attained from dentists, and they usually contain gels that have a lower concentration of peroxide. And instead of hydrogen peroxide, most at-home whitening gels contain carbamide peroxide, which is not as harsh or powerful. The gel is usually applied with tray, and patients receive results over a longer period of time (usually a series of weeks) than in-office procedures.

Although dentists provide a wide assortment of services, from preventative cleanings and check-ups to restorative and repairing treatments, one of the most popular services dentists provide is teeth whitening. And as the whitening and other cosmetic dental services continue to advance, they promise to become cheaper and more popular than ever.

Getting advice on ways to lose weight and look great come in two extremes: the boring, “logical” way that involves counting calories and meticulously measuring your heart rate at the gym and the “too easy” way that involves taking too many pills and crash dieting which can be dangerous.

But isn’t there some solution in between? Can’t we find some way to make the process a little easier and even a little more fun? As a matter of fact, there are some ways to do just that. Now, I will say right off the bat that these tips may not work for everyone, but hopefully, they will be useful to some of you out there!

First of all, take a look at your cupboards and your refrigerator. Dieting doesn’t have to be about self-deprivation. Instead, you need to rethink how you approach food, and the best way to do that is to be armed with knowledge.

You see, fat gives food–especially dairy products–a creamy texture. That is why many non-fat foods become so unappealing. Instead of trying to switch to non-fat foods, try a few different brands of low fat staple items, like ice cream (double-churned in particular), sour cream, milk, and cottage cheese.

Low fat foods like these tend to be equally satisfying as their whole fat counterparts but are obviously better for you in the long run. But be careful you do not consume more than you normally would just because the food item is “low fat.”

Don’t be completely afraid of weight loss aids. Many diet pills contain high amounts of caffeine and other stimulants, but HCG–a hormone that is touted for its potential to help in weight loss endeavors–can come in a variety of forms, including shots and HCG drops and may increase weight loss when paired with healthy habits.

Everyone knows that exercise is a vital part of the weight loss process. But the key to having fun is to target what sort of exercise suits you best. Some people get motivated when they have a “gym buddy,” with whom they take classes, go biking, or lift weights.

Others prefer solitude. Your local gym might offer classes, but you may feel pushed away by the thought of “performing” before others–or worse, messing up. In that case, you should take some time to browse the internet or your local video store to find what most interests you.

For example, I have recently discovered a great love for belly dancing, but local classes are pricey and frequently include required recitals. The thought makes me shake! But in the comfort of my own home, I can dance away without those anxieties.

Explore your options until you find something you are crazy for. I promise, there is something for everyone!

Our skin is the largest organ of our entire body. Unfortunately, we do not always treat it that way. Instead, it is often seen as a frustration, a troublesome accessory, not unlike our clothes or our hairstyle.

But over time, our frustration will only grow if we do not learn to treat our skin well and treat underlying problems and conditions. Yet there are so many options on the market. We are constantly bombarded with advertisements about all kinds of different products. How do we make a choice?

First of all, even if you have apparently young, resilient, healthy skin, you need to start taking precautions against aging and damage. In fact, if this is the condition of your skin, you are fortunate because you can prevent serious problems instead of concerning yourself with healing them later.

Always wear sunscreen, but be sure that it is a non-greasy formula, specially formulated for the delicate skin of your face. Some day lotions that are included in a complete regimen have a light SPF.

The same is true for many brands that make foundation. But if you don’t wear foundation every day, be sure to find a light moisturizer that takes care of your skin’s need for protection. Wear it even on days when the sun does not appear to be out. After all, there are still UV rays out that will damage the skin.

Pinpoint the problematic areas of your skin. As early as our twenties, we can begin developing under-eye wrinkles, fine lines, spotting, and uneven skin tone. That is all not to mention issues that can affect men and women of any age: dark circles and/or puffiness around the eyes, acne, and dry or oily skin.

Typically speaking, using over the counter products can provide at least some relief as long as you are searching for the right ingredients. Antioxidants–such as Vitamins A and C–bring new life to the skin, while peptides can rebuild proteins. Gentle exfoliants allow new, plump skin cells to surface, giving the skin a healthy glow.

But there are some cases where the basic products at your grocery store will not help. Serious skin woes need serious attention. You might consider visiting a dermatologist for a consultation. There are also many professional skincare lines available online if you know where to look.

Some of these are so specific to skin troubles that you need to fill out specific paperwork to find out if your issues meet the criteria for the products themselves. Don’t be scared off by this necessity. Instead, see it as an opportunity to get help for your own needs.

In recent years, something in our overall culture has triggered a desire for more “natural” consumer products. We want natural (or “organic“) foods, supplements, and skincare treatments. For whatever reason, we want to get back to the basic ingredients with which we have been provided by the earth.

While this direction can certainly be a positive one, we as consumers need to beware of what we are buying, even if the label for a skincare product boasts that it is “all natural.” Even some of my favorite brands have their flaws, and I have learned how to look sharp before buying.

First of all, you need to learn to carefully read ingredients. The front label will always emphasize the ingredients that sound most appealing and simplistic, but sometimes you will be surprised or even repelled by what you see on the back.

For example, many natural cleansers are heavily oil-based. They do, in fact, use “natural” oils, but these are counterproductive for oily and/or acne-prone skin. On the other hand, the lipids in natural oils can be helpful for dry skin types.

Many organic skin remedies take pride in their lack of preservatives. Now, as we know, preservatives are manufactured in order to keep the ingredients of any product–food or otherwise–fresh and effective.

A skin treatment free of preservatives might sound appealing, but imagine drinking spoiled milk. Most of us have done it at least once (by mistake). Yuck, right? Now imagine rubbing that on your face.

If you are buying something in a smaller quantity and/or you expect to use a particular product fairly quickly, then don’t sweat the lack of preservatives. But if you expect to be using a particular treatment over the course of more than a few weeks, you need to choose something with preservatives in the mix.

This next tip applies to skincare products of all kinds: beware of the blanket statement, “Suitable for all skin types.” Your skin is a living, breathing organ; it is not the same as anyone else’s. While we use categories like “sensitive,” “dry,” and “oily,” to describe qualities of skin, everyone is a bit different.

That is why you need to be so careful about the products you choose for yourself. Even taking recommendations from friends and relatives can be tricky.

I hope you don’t think that I am downing natural skincare products. We should take advantage of the things the earth has given us to have healthy skin. But simply trusting in natural treatments can cause more problems. Don’t be afraid of dermatological science–it has been developed for a reason!

Let’s face it: our society is constantly telling us through a variety of ways what exactly the perfect woman looks like. Our collective worship of celebrities, punctuated by criticism whenever a famous femme gains or loses too much weight. It can become very nerve-wracking for the average Jane.

But on the other hand, the counterculture of everyday ladies seems to pin the possibility of cosmetic surgery as entirely shallow and/or unnecessary. While you may be contemplating breast augmentation or some other procedure, you are also fearing the judgment that may be passed upon you.

My take on plastic surgery of all kinds is much different than the “norm.” In fact, I am all for it under the right conditions. But what are those right conditions? Only the individual can tell. So, are you ready to get breast implants? Only you can make the final decision, but here are some things to think about.

How long have you been wanting breast augmentation surgery? Surgery of any kind is not something to undertake on a whim, which is why so many doctors require multiple consultations. But before you even take that step, you need to weigh your desires against other factors.

If you are still young, you need to realize that your breasts can continue to grow even into your mid-twenties. Furthermore, circumstances like pregnancy and breastfeeding are almost bound to change the size of your breasts.

In the event that you are closer to middle-aged and you have decidedly finished with your family planning, you are going to be better equipped to make such a big decision. Keep in mind that getting an augmentation before you have finished breastfeeding can cause some complications.

How do you think of yourself without implants? How do you envision yourself with them? If you associate breast augmentation with easy confidence and automatic happiness, you need to slow down. Many people make the mistake of believing cosmetic surgery will fix their self-image problems only to be disappointed (and possibly in debt) later.

Instead, focus on looking and feeling good right now. Do the things you know you should you should–exercise, eat well, and enjoy the simple things of life. If you have serious body image problems, then you should consider seeing a therapist that specializes in your issue.

Finally, after you have taken all of these aspects into account, you should do some research about the varying types of implants offered by cosmetic surgeons in your area. There are actually dramatic differences among the types, so be sure to weigh your options carefully.
