Facial tics are short, repetitive, irregular spasms of the muscles of the face. They are very varied, but the most commonly seen are facial grimacing, eye blinking, nose wrinkling, mouth twitches, squinting along with grunting and throat clearing. Such tics are usually symptomatic of neurological disorders such as Tourette syndrome. They most often happen during childhood and can disappear within some weeks, even if some can last much longer.

The causes of facial tics still are poorly understood, but a few things are thought to trigger or worsen the symptoms. Tics can be caused by some nutritional deficiencies such as a magnesium insufficiency, but they can also very often be symptoms of other diseases such as Tourette syndrome, whose causes are most likely neurological, and, to a certain extent, genetic. Anxiety and stress have also been proven to provoke and greatly aggravate the tics’ frequency.

Facial tics are hard to live with particularly for a child. Schoolmates, teachers and sometimes even parents, may not understand how tough it is to hold back tics, particularly for a long time period such as for example a class. People will very often ask the child to “stop it”, or may even mock him or her for having tics.

From facial grimaces to eye blinking, tics almost always feel embarrassing and inappropriate for both adults and children. It is also fatiguing when one must try to control them all the time. This obsession could make you overly self-critical and you could consequently start to lose confidence in yourself and to develop some kind of social anxiety.

It is however possible to get rid of this embarrassment and to avoid other people’s uncomfortable looks. There are ways to significantly reduce, and even sometimes totally cure, facial ticks, in order to regain your peace of mind and have a completely normal life. You might never have to worry again about facial grimaces or controlling any of those annoying twitches.

Facial tics are usually left untreated or, in some acute cases or when the tics are proven to be caused by Tourette syndrome, patients may be prescribed neuroleptics which are also prescribed to treat diseases such as schizophrenia, attention deficit disorder or obsessive-compulsive behaviors. Such drugs were not designed to cure facial tics in particular and might not be efficient all the time.

Moreover, they are known to have numerous undesirable side effects both on the short and long term. Depression, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, weight gain and anxiety are only some of the numerous undesirable side effects which can be caused by these drugs. Some of them can even worsen tics over time! But there are however other ways of dealing with facial tics which are totally natural and free of undesirable side effects.

Methods which utilize (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) and hypnosis have been designed especially in order to treat facial tics. They can help you reduce them over time. To understand why such methods work it is important to remember that tics are not a totally physical disease and are not entirely involuntary either. They are an answer to an unconscious impulse to do the movement of the tic. This desire disagreeably increases as you try to avoid performing the movement. Those impulses also increase in both frequency and intensity if the patient is stressed or anxious or if he is placed in a particular situation.

Facial tics are a way to relieve pressure when you are anxious or are placed in a stressful environment. This unconscious association could be treated with NLP and hypnosis because they make it possible to alter the sort of behavior your unconscious triggers when you are placed in certain situations. If acute, the therapist will eliminate the facial tic by suggesting the unconscious make you move your toe instead. When the toe moves it is not visible or apparent to people around you. Hypnosis also allows you to become a lot more relaxed in general, so it is a soothing experience. It will help you get rid of both the stress and anxiety which aggravate facial tics.

Facial tics come in many different types: nose wrinkling, eye blinking, mouth twitches, squinting, grunting, facial grimacing or throat clearing. Although tics have physical causes, there are very strong psychological factors too. Anxiety and stress are doubtlessly the most important of these factors. Tics have their roots in the unconscious mind as an answer to states of stress or anxiety; with NLP and self-hypnosis you will be able to alter this association. Anxiety and stress can also be efficaciously fought in the long run with the appeasing, stress relieving techniques of hypnotherapy, which will considerably reduce the occurrence of facial tics.

The smokeless tobacco addiction is every bit as deadly as a cigarette addiction – maybe even more so. In fact, most proclaim that it is even more insidious. It has been been glamourized by influential sports heroes who chew, and many have started their habit as early as the age of nine. And by the time that many of these kids turn eighteen, they are overcome by mouth and throat cancer, and may be dying.

There is nothing quite as ugly as a face ravaged by tumors or cancer, except maybe how the victim’s face looks after having surgery to amputate the jawbone, lips, or tongue. Unfortunately, in most cases the surgical massacre of the victim’s face really doesn’t matter, because they are dead within a year anyway.

Doctors tell us that the physical part of the Nicotine addiction is broken after abstaining for seven days. But the psychological part of the addiction is far stronger and may take a much longer time and a lot more effort to overcome, which makes it very difficult to give up smokeless tobacco.

There are 3 distinct elements contained in a dipping habit. Two of the elements are mental, and only one part is physical.

Part A: You Cchew For Relaxation And Pleasure.

When you were a child and you got cranky, your mother would put a nipple into your mouth to calm you down. You would get distracted, become calm, and often fall asleep. That scenario was repeated dozens of times so that your unconscious mind was programmed: When something goes into your mouth, you get relaxation and pleasure from it.

Now that you are a grownup, if you feel anxious or tense, you crave something in your mouth for relaxation and pleasure – chewing tobacco!

Part B: Dipping Tobacco Is A Conditioned Response.

Remember Pavlov? Every time that he fed his dogs he would ring a bell. After a few repetitions, all he had to do was to ring the bell, and the sound of the bell would trigger the dogs to salivate.

When you connect together chewing with any other activity, the other activity will trigger cravings for tobacco and a urge to chew. This is called a conditioned response.

For example: If you chew when you watch a movie, you will automatically get an urge to chew each time you go to the movies.

Here is exactly how this conditioned response gets programmed into your subconscious: If a person dips smokeless and simultaneously drives a car, the mind takes a snapshot of the smokeless tobacco in the hand, and ties it to the image of the steering wheel, dashboard, or view out the windshield, etc.. Thereafter, every time the person drives the car, his subconscious mind fills in the missing part of the picture. It flashes an image of the dip in the hand coming towards the mouth, and the dipper gets a craving for smokeless.

You may not be consciously aware of the mental movie of the smokeless, because it may only be at the subconscious level of mind. Just as you are unaware of what you are seeing through your peripheral vision until someone or something draws your attention to it. But the image is there, creating a craving for smokeless.

Part C: There Is A Physical Addiction To Nicotine, But . . .

I’ve worked face-to-face with several thousand people for tobacco addiction and I guarantee you that the physical addiction to smokeless tobacco is the weakest part of the addiction. In fact, I believe that it is only ten percent of the addiction to smokeless. I believe that 90% of the habit are the mental and emotional parts! (Parts A and B).

HERE IS WHAT THIS MEANS TO A PERSON WHO CHEWS AND WHO WANTS TO QUIT.

What this means is that when you eliminate the anxiety that makes you put dip into your mouth for relaxation and pleasure (Part A) . . . and if you can extinguish the conditioned response of feeling an urge for dip when watching TV, driving, or finishing a meal, etc. (Part B) . . . then you can stop dipping tobacco without needing willpower, and without having to suffer from withdrawal symptoms or weight-gain.

Self-hypnosis will make it easy to stop chewing because it takes care of Parts A & B! Here is how:

Part A is where people dip for relaxation and pleasure. It’s your thoughts that create feelings of tension. More to the point, people constantly play mental movies in their mind’s eye. If the movie is negative, it creates a feeling of tension.

We can use various hypnosis and NLP techniques to program the unconscious mind to quickly take those tension producing mental images, and automatically exchange them for relaxation producing mental pictures and movies. This manufactures relaxation and pleasure, and eliminates the tension that triggers the oral compulsions and urges for chewing.

Because of the elimination of feelings of anxiety, the person who is quitting doesn’t feel the compulsion or need to substitute food in place of the smokeless tobacco. So quitting without weight gain is possible.

Breaking the addiction to smokeless tobacco is very similar to overcoming the addiction to food, cigarettes, and nail biting. I have many additional original articles on these topics in my free hypnosis and NLP article index.

Part B is where you get cravings for tobacco because dipping smokeless tobacco becomes a conditioned response to many different activities and locations. Remember in the earlier example how smoking became unconsciously associated with other activities and environments so that each time you get into that activity or environment, the mind flashes an image of smokeless, and the image of the smokeless triggers an urge to dip?

There are efficient and powerful hypnosis and NLP methods that can effortlessly eliminate those conditioned responses so that your subconscious mind will lose the cravings for smokeless, and the compulsion to dip tobacco. As a matter of fact, you can even get a compulsion to reject chewing tobacco.

To Summarize: In summation, when we use certain NLP techniques, it can be very easy to stop chewing tobacco without weight gain or having to suffer from withdrawal. And many of these methods like video hypnosis and NLP do not even require post-hypnotic suggestions. They depend on training the unconscious mind to use the same mental processes that it is using to create the addiction to dipping smokeless, to eliminate the mental addiction.

Sleep disturbances are a common symptom of stress and depression. Whether you have a hard time falling asleep, or you fall asleep promptly and then awaken later and are unable to fall back to sleep, you have a sleep disturbance.

There Are Four Types Of Insomnia:

Psycho-reactive Insomnia: Tension is the most common cause of Psycho-reactive Insomnia. It is generally worry that is keeping the person awake. The worry can become worse, because often the person begins to worry about falling asleep or not getting any sleep. The person may worry that they may become ill or die from lack of sleep.

Endogenous Insomnia: This is usually caused by a discomfort within the body ranging from indigestion to pain.

Exogenous Insomnia: This is caused by external disturbances such as noise or a TV that is too loud. This is the easiest type of insomnia to beat.

Functional Insomnia: This is caused by a functional problem in the subject’s sleep-wakefulness center in the brain.

Many insomnia sufferers develop a phobia of going to bed because they expect to lie awake. This negative type of expectation can cause a bout of insomnia all by itself.

Here Are The Facts:

1. No person ever died from not sleeping enough. The mind and body will get at least the minimum amount of sleep that it needs, no matter what. If you don’t get enough sleep one night the next night you will get enough sleep to make up the loss.

2. Our internal clock brings about a valley of fatigue in cycles. Every four to six hours you will experience your maximum fatigue, and this is when it’s easiest for you to fall asleep. Once you pass that valley of fatigue you will experience a renewed level of energy and it will become difficult for you to fall asleep.

3. Many people are sure that they haven’t slept a wink, but it has been proven that everyone sleeps during the night. Sometimes you feel that you’ve been lying awake thinking, but actually you have been sleeping lightly and dreaming.

4. Trying to fall asleep: There is a law of nature called “The Law of Reversed Effect.” The law says that if you “try” to do something, you will get the opposite. And the harder you “try,” the more you will get the opposite. So, trying to fall asleep will insure that you will remain awake. Do not “try” to fall asleep, and do not try to will yourself to sleep. Merely allow yourself to fall asleep.

5. Alcohol will put you to sleep: This may be true, because alcohol is a depressant. However, as soon as the booze wears off, you will awaken abruptly and it will be much harder to fall asleep.

6. Sleeping pills can help: It is the dream phase of sleep in which we get our rest. Narcotics suppress the dream phase of sleep (REM sleep). That is why one generally awakens more tired than before going to sleep after using sleeping pills.

Effecting A Cure:

1. figure out when you feel most exhausted in the evening. From that point on, every evening at least an hour before that time, take a bath that is slightly warmer than body temperature for 20 minutes. A shower will not have the intended effect.

2. Have a warm beverage, preferably not coffee because of the caffeine, which will wake you up. Warm milk is the best if you can tolerate it.

3. Stop dwelling on problems and think about something soothing. Don’t think about what you need to do tomorrow. If you are concerned about forgetting what you have to do tomorrow, write it down.

4. Avoid stimulating thoughts and TV shows. If you must read, then read something that is boring.

5. Reserve your bed for sleep. Read and watch TV only from a chair or while on a couch.

6. Get into bed at least 20 minutes before your valley of fatigue. Once in bed, if worries start to pop into your mind, repeat this mantra several times to yourself, “I’ll think about it tomorrow.” This will help to eliminate the excessive thinking. Do not try to make your mind blank and don’t try to fall asleep. Just allow yourself to get some rest.

7. For Endogenous Insomnia, you should eradicate the discomfort to the best of your ability.

8. For Exogenous Insomnia, make your room as quiet as possible. If your partner watches TV, you can move to another room. Running a fan motor can encourage sleep, as it will tend to muffle outside noises. The monotonous drone of the fan can prove to be quite hypnotic.

Hypnosis For Insomnia – Psycho-reactive and Functional Insomnia:

Practice hypnosis for insomnia on a daily basis. Tension worsens and can even cause a sleeping problem. Hypnosis CD’s can help you to rapidly dissipate stress. Post-hypnotic suggestions for coping, and to encourage the anticpation of sleep can assist. Your sub vocalized motto should be: “I fall asleep promptly, and sleep soundly and restfully all through the night.”

Nail biting is related to skin picking and hair pulling. These behaviors are labeled as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders. Nail biters often keep their hands hidden in their pockets. Nail biters often feel shame and social embarrassment and experience out-of-control feelings at times. Sometimes they wonder why they can’t stop and they often question whether or not they are crazy.

Nail biting usually happens when nail biters are in one of two modes. Some people do it in an automatic way, as if they are in some kind of altered state and not really thinking about what they are doing. It’s often when they are engrossed in some other activity at the same time such as reading, talking on the phone, working at the computer, watching TV, etc. For others, the deliberate picking or biting is their main activity at the time, and they will usually interrupt their other activities to engage in it.

There is a strong commonality seen in the purposes behind nail biting, skin picking and hair pulling. At a very basic level, these symptoms satisfy an urge. Many report an uncontrollable feeling of needing to do them. Biting, picking or pulling also seems to deliver a pleasurable or relaxed sensation.

When sufferers feel stressed, doing these things has a kind of soothing effect on their nervous systems and reduces levels of stimulation. On the other hand, when they are bored or inactive, they seem to provide a needed level of stimulation to the nervous system. This probably accounts for why so many people who dislike doing them find it so hard to give up these behaviors. It simply “feels good” at the time no matter what the consequences.

Even if you have more than one of these problems, don’t despair. These negative behaviors can be overcome if you have a sufficient amount of motivation. More important is learning to “de-stigmatize” yourself. You are not crazy, helpless, morally weak or totally out of control, even though you may feel like you are at times. Once you get down to realizing that you are just a person who simply happens to have a bad habit, you can make some serious progress.

Skin picking and nail biting are chronic problems, so there currently isn’t a “cure” but you can find relief if you are willing to work at it. Therapy for nail biting consists of three parts.

NLP & Hypnotherapy For People Who Bite Their Nails

To start with, nail biting is a stress related habit. So the first part of the therapy is to teach the nail biter how to be more relaxed at all times. To that end, I believe that traditional hypnosis, Ericksonian hypnosis, and NLP techniques can be quite effective. That’s because the very essence of hypnosis is relaxation. The individual can learn to apply several different methods to increase both the relaxed state, as well as his/her overall feeling of relaxation and well-being.

The second part of the therapy teaches the individual to become aware of this unconscious habit. Suggestions are generally given to the subconscious mind to make the conscious mind aware that you are about to bite your nails. Then you get to consciously decide whether or not you are actually going to bite them.

There are also several other powerful hypnosis and NLP techniques. For example, we can help the client to set up an “Anchor” or trigger so that he/she can momentarily mentally step outside of him/herself. This is an excellent technique that will effectively relieve the compulsion.

The third part of the hypnotherapy is to eliminate the compulsion to bite the nails. There are hypnotic techniques that actually program the client with a compulsion to not bite.

With the nail biting compulsion, being realistic is very important. In the first place, you have practiced the unwanted habit hundreds or even thousands of times. It is important to accept that the compulsion to bite your nails will not simply be overcome in a few weeks.

Secondly, you are fighting the fact that biting your nails feels good to do, and it provides much short-range satisfaction and either stimulation or soothing feelings. It can take a little time to overcome, but it will be well worth the effort. Experience has shown a number of techniques to be quite effective!

Some people call it the ‘blues’ and some people call it the ‘pits’ and some call it ‘feeling down in the dumps’. But whatever you call it, it does not feel very good at all. The most common types of depression are:

Major Depression, which is characterized by a sad mood, Insomnia, and the lack of desire for food. Often when an individual is in a major depression, there is an utter lack of drive and motivation and the sufferer does not want to participate in life. Some people are completely disabled by depression, and some even contemplate suicide.

Dysthymia: This is a less severe type of long term depression that usually does not totally disable the individual. But it prevents the person from feeling motivated and functioning at optimum levels. Sometimes people who are struggling with Dysthymia are also afflicted with Major Depression, and when this occurs it is referred to as double depression.

Manic Depression is also called Bipolar Disorder. This type of depression is not as common as the first two. It involves phases of the Manic state, alternated with the depressed state. This is often a long term recurring disorder. Sometimes the mood swings occur suddenly. But generally speaking, onset tends to be gradual.

There are a number of variations of depression; the types described here are only three of the most common.

Some symptoms of depression include:

Anxiety; pessimism; sadness; insomnia and other sleep disorders; feelings of worthlessness; guilt; weight loss; fatigue; restlessness; headaches; pain; and thoughts of suicide.

Sources of Depression:

Some types of depression are linked to genetics. Living in a stressful environment can precipitate a depression. A trauma such as financial problems, a serious loss, or problems in a relationship can also lead to depression.

Women are twice as likely to become depressed as men are, but we do not yet know why.

If you suffer from depression, you will want to seek the advice of your physician. Your doctor may prescribe drugs for you. But keep in mind that every drug has side effects.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if you could control and eliminate your depression just by having certain thoughts? I know that this sounds too good to be true, but very often, many types of depression are caused by having persistently negative thoughts.

You can see this for yourself at this very moment. It is really quite basic and simple. Just use your imagination to think about something that you find very sad or troubling. Go ahead, think about it right now! Then come back to this article.

What happened? If you truly got into it and visualized the sad situation, you began to feel sad and a little depressed. The more you allow yourself to stay in that thought pattern, the sadder you’ll feel. As you keep having sad thoughts and keep feeling sadder, you lead yourself into a gradually intensifying depression.

The good news is that if you think about a positive thought, then you’ll supplant that depression and sadness and have happy feelings instead.

Listen carefully now, because here are the solutions to ending your depression: Our persistent thoughts emerge from the unconscious. These are the thoughts that we find ourselves naturally thinking about during the day.

If the persistent thoughts that are continually popping into your mind are about your problems or sad experiences, then you increase your levels of depression, anxiety, and stress.

Now here is the ‘Light at the end of the tunnel’: Since hypnosis can be used to change our unconscious thoughts, NLP and self hypnosis stress management programs will quickly alter the way that you think, feel, and behave. The best part is that the same exact techniques that help reduce stress also work equally well for eliminating depression!

Now I will tell you exactly why and how it is going to happen. Hypnosis is a natural state of mind. Specifically, it is the Alpha state of consciousness. We pass through the Alpha state as we are falling asleep at night. And we pass through it again as we awaken from sleeping. We also enter the Alpha state when we are imagining and daydreaming.

The unconscious is the seat of our emotions, and it is like a computer; the input controls the output! Hypnotherapy is a wonderful tool for reaching directly into the unconscious and reprogramming it to automatically divert you away from negative thoughts, and promote positive thinking. It is a tool that allows you to bypass the consciousness to create positive expectations, which will then create positive feelings. You can overcome depression through hypnotherapy.

Sleep is important for an individual’s body to function, mature, and heal itself after being injured. The majority of researchers advise that adults require from six to eight hours of sleep each night. A number of people, however, are unable to achieve this. Up to 20 million individuals who live in the United States alone experience serious difficulty sleeping every night.

Various circumstances that create sleeping problems are to blame for this startling statistic. For example, many people snore. Loud snoring may even cause sleepers to wake, surprised, at the noise. Furthermore, people whose significant other is a loud snorer often find it hard to sleep while this racket is going on in the same room!

Snoring might also be a symptom of a similar sleeping problem called sleep apnea. This happens when someone quits breathing during sleep. It is sometimes a result of blockages in the nasal and sinus passages, or from being overweight. This condition is potentially deadly, and individuals who have sleep apnea often wear a mask that sends pressured air to their lungs during sleep.

Sleep apnea may cause narcolepsy, another common sleeping problem. Often, however, people who do not have sleep apnea are diagnosed with narcolepsy. Those who have this condition typically fall asleep suddenly and without warning in whatever location they happen to be. If an individual has been found to have narcolepsy, the doctor often prescribes that person to refrain from driving until the disorder is being properly treated; sleeping while driving can be extremely hazardous!

Yet another potentially dangerous sleeping disorder is referred to as sleepwalking, but can be described referred to in scientific research as somnambulism. Those who sleepwalk do the identical behaviors – cleaning house, drinking, walking, and so on – that they perform when they are awake. Nearly one-fifth of the world’s population may sleepwalk.

Sometimes, people have often documented cases of people who have left their homes or committed extreme crimes during a sleepwalking episode! Most of the time, however, the individual who is sleepwalking is in significantly greater danger than those witnessing the event. The recommended approach is to assist the individual get back to bed.

One other sleeping disturbance described as shift work sleep disorder is common to those who work alternating shift schedules, afternoon, or night shifts. This difficulty can result in one of two forms of sleep disorders: extreme tiredness, or insomnia. Moreover, persons who have shift work sleep disorder experience a greater risk of cancer than people who do not experience it.

Persons diagnosed with insomnia typically have problems sleeping at bedtime. In the event that they are able to go to sleep, they typically fail to sleep well and are awakened easily. They might only sleep for a short time before experiencing this condition.

The consequences of this sleeping problem include sleepiness and impaired physical functioning. Even though those who cope with insomnia may suffer from sleepiness, however, chronic insomnia sufferers often realize that they are constantly overly alert, and find it difficult to relax or remain calm. Additional possible effects of this condition include physical and emotional exhaustion.

A large number of believe they know how to cure insomnia. Some cures are some interesting home remedies for insomnia. One of these is a concoction of burnt cinnamon in hot water, although there is no solid proof demonstrating that this concoction] is effective. Other home remedies for insomnia involve such activities as taking melatonin, drinking herbal tea mixtures, and hot baths.

Alternative insomnia cure strategies include Chinese medicine or acupuncture, and drinking wine at bedtime. Many herbal remedies have been used as possible ways to cure insomnia, including valerian, lavender, and lobelia. Certain individuals have even tried behavioral therapy approaches trying to find a successful insomnia cure. Many drugs have been developed to help people sleep.

A newer cure for insomnia is insomnia hypnosis, or insomnia hypnotherapy. Therapists who use insomnia hypnotherapy assist people to experience good sleeping routines by introducing a sequence of suggestive thoughts that will allow them to get to sleep with less difficulty. People learn the skills of self-hypnosis to effectively treat their insomnia. This approach is a form of insomnia hypnotherapy that can be very effective in treating suggestive clients, but is much less useful for persons who think analytically. A very similar strategy, referred to as Neuro-Linguistic Programming, or NLP, is much more effective with these people.

So many possible cures for sleeplessness exist that this article is unable cover them all. Experts do not agree about insomnia cures. Most clients who have tried Neuro-Linguistic Programming and insomnia hypnotherapy, however, have reported them to be highly beneficial in helping them achieve sound, peaceful sleep. These innovative and effective strategies, in comparison with sleeping medications or other alternative remedies, has no hangover or side effects, and can be used nearly anywhere.

Summary: As many as one in ten persons of people living in the United States suffers from some kind of sleeping dysfunction. Insomnia is a sleep disorder that stops persons from going to sleep or sleeping soundly each night. Various treatment strategies are employed to help people cope with this disorder. One of the most beneficial, as reported by persons who have experienced this technique, is hypnosis for insomnia.
