States across the country have banned smokers from public areas. Hospitals have gone smoke-free, and are penalizing workers for smoking during work hours. Smokers stand out in the cold, wind or rain, and smoke away as quickly as possible so that they can return to their workplace.

In some communities, smoking has become as controversial as illegal drugs. Because they recognize these and other stop smoking benefits, many people are trying to find ways to quit smoking.

There are three components to a smoking habit:

1. People smoke for relaxation and pleasure. This makes up about 45% of the smoking habit.

2. People smoke because they have created an unconscious association between an activity or environment and a cigarette. Then, every time they get into that environment, they get a craving.

Example: If you watch TV and smoke, the smoking will become a conditioned response to watching TV. So each time you watch TV, you’ll feel an urge to smoke. This makes up about 45% of the habit.

3. People smoke because they develop a physical addiction to Nicotine. This makes up about 10% of the habit. If a person stops smoking, the body actually metabolizes all of the Nicotine in as little as three days!

A number of alternatives are available to help people find ways to stop smoking. One of the most inexpensive ways to quit smoking, covered by many insurance companies, is the nicotine patch. Easy to apply, each patch is worn for 24 hours and can be concealed underneath clothing.

Unfortunately, however, these patches are not very effective. Since patches only deal with the physical addiction, which makes up only about 10% of the habit, their success rate is only 7%.

The same success rate is characteristic of nicotine gum or lozenges. Less than one in ten persons who use these products succeeds with these ways to stop smoking for six months or more.

Worse, these products have side effects. Nicotine gum or lozenges can be irritating to the mouth and lips, while many people experience skin irritation under the patch. Again, these products only deal with the physical addiction, which only makes up about 10% of the habit.

Another alternative is the use of counseling and smoking cessation programs. These programs include behavior modification techniques and extensive education about the harmful effects of smoking. These programs are three times as effective as nicotine replacement therapies; the success rate is 22% at six months.

Many smokers have tried laser treatment programs to help stop smoking. This treatment is sometimes covered by insurance, although it is new. Clinical trials performed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), however, have found that the laser treatments are no more effective than placebo. (Placebo is when people believe they are receiving a treatment, but actually are not.)

One of the ways to stop smoking has shown a little more effectiveness than these previous methods. In one study, smokers have received shots to help them quit smoking by taking away the pleasurable effects of the nicotine rush. This method, in the preliminary stages of testing for effectiveness, so far appears to be effective for 15% of the people who tried it.

Hypnotherapy is another method of helping people to quit smoking. Hypnotherapy focuses on programming the unconscious mind to automatically substitute other behaviors to provide relaxation and pleasure, in place of the smoking addiction.

It can also be used to erase or “extinguish” conditioned responses like the connection between the TV and the cigarette in the above example, so the smoker loses the urge to smoke when in the environments that used to trigger it.

Men appear to be more amenable to stop smoking hypnosis than women do. One benefit of self hypnosis stop smoking, however, is that, unlike those who use nicotine replacement as ways to quit smoking, there are no irritating side effects.

Another benefit of hypnotherapy is that it works on the 90% part of the addiction that is psychological, versus the other methods that only attack the 10% part of the addiction that is physical.

These facts cause hypnosis to have a much greater success rate than the previously mentioned methods of smoke cessation. Traditional hypnosis techniques can deliver a 35% success rate, while Ericksonian hypnotherapy can deliver a 50% or higher success rate.

A newer, innovative, and far more effective method that helps people to obliterate a cigarette addiction is Neuro-Linguistic Programming, or NLP. The NLP techniques are far more effective than traditional forms of quit smoking hypnosis because they do not rely on post-hypnotic suggestions at all.

Most people, especially those who tend to be analytical in nature, resist post-hypnotic suggestions. With NLP, the unconscious is trained to use the same exact thought processes that are creating the mental addiction to cigarettes, to eliminate it!

A well thought out NLP stop smoking program created by a certified NLP Practitioner can produce a success rate of up to 70% or more.

Summary: Most smoking cessation programs attempt to use nicotine replacement therapies as ways to quit smoking. Other programs, such as smoking cessation and cognitive or behavioral treatment programs, attempt to help the mind find ways to stop smoking.

Although hypnosis is more effective than other programs, particularly with male patients, it is not rated as the most effective way to quit smoking. NLP, which addresses the mental components of the smoking addiction, actually assists people to alter their thought processes so that they are able to quit most effectively.

Since 90% of a person’s addiction to cigarettes is psychological in nature, these treatments are much more effective than merely replacing the nicotine and dealing with the 10% part of the addiction that is physical.

Conclusion: Many smoking cessation programs, including nicotine replacement therapy and counseling are available. These programs often have a success rate of less than 20%.

In contrast, hypnotherapy offers a much higher rate of success. And NLP offers an even higher degree of effectiveness in helping people to successfully combat the psychological nature of their addiction and find much more success in their goal of becoming smoke-free.

The addiction to smokeless tobacco is easily as deadly as the addiction to smoking. In fact, many experts think that it is even more insidious. Chewing has been glamorized by sports professionals. Many people who dip tobacco started as early as 9 years of age! And by the time that many of these kids turn 18, they are overcome by mouth and throat cancer, and may be dying.

While a person with lung cancer can look normal, the face of a victim of mouth cancer can be an awful sight. Imagine how a face looks after having a jawbone cut out, or the lips or tongue surgically removed. Usually the surgical butchering of the victim’s face is all for nothing, because many die within a year or so anyway.

Doctors tell us that the physical part of the Nicotine addiction is broken after abstaining for seven days. But the psychological part of the addiction is far stronger and may take a much longer time and a lot more effort to overcome, which makes it very difficult to give up smokeless tobacco.

There are three individual components to a dipping habit. Two of the parts are emotional/mental, and only one part is physical.

Part A: You chew tobacco for relaxation and pleasure.

When you were a little baby and you got restless, your mother would put a nipple into your mouth to calm you down. You would get distracted, become mellower, and often go to sleep. That scenario was repeated hundreds of times so that your unconscious mind was programmed: When something goes into your mouth, you get relaxation and pleasure from it.

Now that you are an adult, if you feel nervous or tense, you crave something in your mouth for relaxation and pleasure – dip!

Part B: Chewing is a conditioned response.

Remember Pavlov? Every time that he fed his dogs he would ring a bell. After several repetitions, all he had to do was to ring the bell, and that would make the dogs salivate.

When you link dipping with any other action, the other action will trigger cravings for smokeless tobacco and a feeling of urgency to chew. This is called a conditioned response.

For example: If you chew when you play baseball, you will automatically get an urge to chew each time you play baseball.

Here is exactly how this conditioned response gets programmed into your unconscious: If a person chews smokeless tobacco and simultaneously drives a car, the mind takes a snapshot of the tobacco in the hand, and links it to the image of the steering wheel, dashboard, or view out the windshield, etc.. Thereafter, every time the person drives the car, her subconscious fills in the missing part of the picture. It flashes an image of the smokeless in the hand coming towards the mouth, and the dipper gets a craving for smokeless.

You may not be consciously aware of the mental picture of the smokeless, because it may only be at the unconscious level of mind. Just as you are unaware of what you are seeing through your peripheral vision until something draws your attention to it. But the image is there, creating a craving for smokeless tobacco.

Part C: There is a physical addiction to nicotine, but. . .

After having worked with several thousand people for tobacco cessation I can guarantee you that the physical addiction is the weakest part of the addiction to smokeless. In fact, I believe that it is only ten percent of the addiction to tobacco. Ninety percent of the habit are the mental and emotional parts! (Parts A and B).

Here is what this means to a person who chews smokeless tobacco and who wants to quit.

What this means is that as soon as you eliminate the tension that pushes you to chew smokeless for relaxation and pleasure (Part A) . . . and if you can extinguish the conditioned response of feeling urges for chew when watching TV, driving, or finishing a meal, etc. (Part B) . . . then you can stop dipping tobacco without needing willpower, and without suffering from withdrawal symptoms or weight-gain.

Self-hypnosis will make it easy to break the addiction to smokeless because it takes care of Parts A & B! Here is how:

Part A is where dippers dip smokeless tobacco for relaxation and pleasure. It’s our thoughts that create anxiety. More specifically, people constantly play mental movies in their mind’s eye. If the movie is negative, it creates a feeling of stress.

We can use various hypnotic methods to program the unconscious to quickly and easily take those tension creating mental pictures and movies, and instantly exchange them for relaxation producing mental pictures and movies. This creates relaxation and pleasure, and eliminates the tension that causes the oral compulsions for dipping.

Because of the elimination of feelings of anxiety, the person who is quitting does not feel the compulsion or need to substitute food in place of the smokeless tobacco. So quitting without weight gain is possible.

Quitting the addiction to smokeless tobacco is very similar to overcoming the addiction to food, cigarettes, and nail biting. I have many additional original articles on these topics in my free hypnosis and NLP article repository.

Part B is where you dip tobacco because chewing tobacco becomes a conditioned response to many different activities and locations. Remember in the earlier example how smoking became unconsciously associated with other activities and environments so that each time people get into that activity or environment, the mind flashes an image of smokeless, and the image of the smokeless triggers an urge to chew?

There are stop smokeless hypnosis, and quit smokeless NLP techniques that can effortlessly extinguish those conditioned responses so that your unconscious mind will lose the cravings for smokeless, and the compulsion to dip smokeless. As a matter of fact, you can even get a compulsion to reject chewing.

To summarize, when we use certain hypnotic techniques, it can be very easy to stop chewing without weight gain or having to suffer from withdrawal. And many of these hypnotic methods like video self hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic Programming do not even depend on post-hypnotic suggestions. They depend on training the unconscious mind to use the same mental processes that the unconscious is using to create the dipping tobacco habit, to eliminate the mental addiction.

The old adage “no pain, no gain” just is not true. Remember all of the times pain has stopped you from engaging in activities that you enjoy – perhaps playing tennis, running, fishing and even sitting can be impossible when you’re in great discomfort. Did you gain anything from missing out on memories?

However, the adage that “Pain is all in your head” can, often, be true. If that is the case, then the cure is in your head, also.

With hypnotherapy, pain can evaporate. Despite what you may believe, hypnosis is simply a mental state where messages can connect with the unconscious more easily. The state of hypnosis is characterized by deep relaxation. In fact, with regular practice of a hypnosis pain elimination regimen, you will feel much more peaceful over all.

Pain is a signal that something in your body is not right. So pain is technically a beneficial thing. But after you have your medical practitioner give you a check up to make sure that the pain is not signaling a dangerous condition such as a tumor, it’s time to manage or even eliminate the pain.

Young people often suffer from depression, which leaves parents with lots of questions such as: why does it happen, and what can be done to treat depression? In the past, it was thought that adolescents could not have depression, but in reality, depression can affect people of any age. The word agoraphobia literally means “fear of the marketplace,” but sufferers may feel nervous in any location with a crowd. These places are almost always public settings or new areas away from home. Sufferers may fear spending time in restaurants, shopping centers, airplanes, lines, or any area where they might not feel completely safe.

Those with agoraphobia are scared of having panicky feelings or panic attacks in a setting where it would be hard or impossible for them to flee. Agoraphobics usually lead happy and normal lives in the places where they are comfortable, even entertaining guests and working from the comfort of their own homes. Unfortunately, the phobia can be so severe that sometimes the afflicted will only feel secure in the most confined spaces. A recent case in the news revealed a woman whose anxiety was so serious that she would not leave her bathroom for several months, endangering her own health as a result.

Agoraphobia often arises from other panic disorders and irrational fears. For instance, sufferers of social phobia frequently have agoraphobia as well because they are scared of having to socialize with others. It may also result from traumatic occurrences such as having had an accident outside of the home. Soldiers will often develop the phobia along with post-traumatic stress disorder. It affects both genders, though it is thought that agoraphobia is more common amongst women.

In our fast paced world, we are constantly learning new things and we need to have a better memory to recall everything. Students need a better memory for study and passing tests. Most people need a better memory to be successful in their job, and we all need better memories to remember important dates and ideas. However, most people have a difficult time of remembering new ideas and facts. Memory deficiencies typically take place as we grow older, but there are other factors that impair our memories, such as fatigue, stress, depression, and concentration problems. Fortunately, there are a myriad of ways to augment your memory using easy mnemonic devices and hypnotherapy and memory enhancement.

Mnemonic devices are useful memory retention techniques. They appear in the forms of words, pictures, or other associations that help you link concepts and information to each other. Acronyms are a popular mnemonic device formed using the initial letters of words or parts of words in a phrase or name. Let’s say you want to remember a list of cheese, ham, eggs, soap, and salsa. You might use the acronym “CHESS” for cheese, ham, eggs, soap, and salsa. The acronym and the effort you put into generating it help you remember the list.

Acrostic sentences are similar to acronyms. You can use acrostic sentences to remember ordered lists or sequences of events. In an acrostic, you use the first letters, syllables, or words of a sentence to remember another message. In school, students are taught the acrostic sentence “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally” to remember the order of operations in mathematics (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction).

Another well-known mnemonic technique is called the “Method of Loci.” The Method of Loci was used in ancient times to memorize speeches. In this method, you link information to visual cues along a path. First, you think of a physical pathway you are familiar with, such as the commute to work or a walk through your house. Imagine yourself moving along this pathway, and identify distinct landmarks that you pass by. Each landmark will correspond to something you need to remember.

Once you have your path and landmarks, you mentally associate a piece of information with each landmark. Another technique is the “chunking” method of memorization. This method is valuable in committing to memory a series of numbers, such as social security numbers, phone numbers, and dates. For example, you probably remember your social security number as three sets of three digits, or a set of three, two and four digit numbers. Using the chunking trick, you break up a large amount of information into “chunks” that are easier to handle and remember. Additionally, you can organize information into categories to help you remember more complicated things.

Now that you know these memorization techniques, you can utilize them when you are trying to remember information. To successfully form a memory, focus on what you are trying to remember, taking five to eight seconds to process the information. Eliminate distractions from your surroundings that divert your focus of attention from what you want to remember. Jot down the information, read it aloud to yourself, and try to use all of your senses when you are learning new things. If you can experience or associate the information with all of your senses, you will remember it better.

Stress may impair your ability to focus and memorize information, so you must relax! To cope with anxiety, you may be interested in using hypnotherapy to improve concentration, memory and recall abilities. Although memorization tricks are helpful, stress and lack of concentration are the main reasons why people are afflicted with memory problems and can stall your success using the techniques.

If tension and concentration problems are the cause of your memory problems, you can use hypnotherapy to improve memory and recall abilities significantly. Your memory will be greatly improved by combining memorization methods with hypnotherapy and memory improvement techniques.
